November at RFS: Our 2023 predictions for hiring and the job market

Welcome to the November edition of the Recruiting from Scratch Report! We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a great kickoff for the rest of the holiday season. We’re grateful to have you here.

November has been tumultuous across the tech industry, with companies like Meta, Twitter, Lyft, Stripe, and Microsoft announcing job cuts in the hundreds or thousands. The upside is that many desirable candidates have entered the job market.

PS?- have you been affected by a tech layoff? Check out the?roles we’re recruiting for.

We've made?market predictions?through H2 of this year and, as we look to H1, these are the trends we’re watching.

  • Even in an “employer’s market”, offering competitive benefits and flexibility is essential to closing top talent.?Providing the option to work irregular hours, access ample PTO, or take advantage of extra perks (like work-from-home stipends or fitness memberships) will continue to set employers apart in the hiring equation of 2023.
  • Remote work will exist in tandem with hybrid and in-person positions.?Throughout 2022,?we’ve seen a bump in hybrid and in-person roles - yes, even in tech. Work-from-anywhere is still here for those who want it, but fewer positions are fully remote.
  • It’s time for workers to brush up on skills or consider new industries in order to find the best roles.?Like in early 2020, some industries will be impacted more than others in a market downturn. For example, a B2B SaaS Product Marketer on the hunt for a new role might find their next opportunity in digital health or logistics. An open mind and willingness to try new things floats jobseekers in difficult markets.
  • Expect an uptick in contract-to-hire.?With the longevity of a project up in the air or the looming threat of over-hiring, companies may gravitate toward filling positions with a short-term, temporary workforce.
  • The “long game” will be even more critical - for candidates, recruiters, hiring managers, and pretty much anyone else in business.?Your customers may not be ready to buy?right now?and your dream employer may not have a role?right now, but if the past two years have taught us anything, it’s that markets are unpredictable. Creating content, nurturing relationships, and sharing value with your networks keeps you top of mind when a role or customer?is?ready.
