November Onlii Good News

Welcome to the November Edition of Onlii Good News

In this month's issue, we're highlighting transformative innovations that challenge the norm. In a world often driven by commercial considerations, we spotlight those who embrace unconventional thinking fuelled by values. The simplest innovation can create huge shifts in behaviour and the way the world moves forward.

We're celebrating three ideas born out of honest passion and the courage to defy conventions. This is proof that we need to build and preserve spaces for thinkers to explore beyond the norm. Often this might mean ignoring the parameters set by commerciality to innovate based on values first and then apply suitable commercial models to these new ideas.

Hope you enjoy!

The art of transparency.

We recently stumbled across, or rather, had our heads turned by two huge billboards in Manchester. Impossible to ignore, the latest activity from Oatly lands a crucial point with familiar wit, but a serious message. Carbon labelling has slowly been adopted by alternative food and drinks brands in recent times, but it is far from becoming an industry standard. Why?

Oatly have a really valid point. A recent study revealed that 6 out of 10 UK citizens would change their eating habits to lower carbon options if they knew what the impact was. The same way we make choices based on price, ingredients and calories, we should surely have the information available to know we are buying high carbon products.

Giving anyone a place to be free.

Out Social is a completely free brand identity available to download for anyone organising LGBTQ+ events. The package contains the building blocks for creating social content and promotional material, along with user guidance for those new to design.

Liverpool-based studio Moksi have identified the need for open-source creative tools and have taken it upon themselves to create this suite for anyone and everyone. Across the world there is still a need for more safe social spaces so that everyone can be seen and heard, but without access to tools it can be hard for groups to organise. The Out Social identity provides a platform for anyone to adopt, helping them to communicate with venues and audiences, allowing fractured communities to connect. It's such a simple but powerful model - decentralising access to communication tools is a brilliant way to restore social equity.

REVR converts standard cars to hybrid.

The student concept has just been announced as the Australian national winner for the James Dyson Award . As the best inventions often are, the idea came from a real-world problem when Alexander Burton was looking for a way to convert the family car to electric on the cheap.

I'm sure we've all had a few conversations with friends about this, that we wish buying an electric car was an affordable option, but with a breakthrough like this it might only be a matter of time before we have a solution that feels accessible. The system Alexander has invented is retrofitted onto your standard petrol car, with minimal impact on the existing functionality, allowing for the first 60 miles of a journey to run off electric before reverting to the combustion engine. For most standard commutes that is more than enough, so the personal carbon reduction could be substantial.
