November Newsletter

From Sonder Consultants - Global Legal Recruitment Agency

Welcome,

As we enter November the legal market is showing signs of a gradual and steady recovery. However, it's important to acknowledge that there is a degree of uncertainty and caution among both Associates and Partners as we transition into November. For example, we have noticed that some recruitment processes are now concluding in as little as two weeks, whereas others may extend up to three months. Certain top-tier law firms are displaying a keen eagerness to expand their teams, while others are adopting a more cautious approach to hiring.

As a result of these varying approaches, we anticipate significant changes in the firm rankings over the next 12-24 months. Some firms are seizing the opportunity to proactively expand, while others are choosing to adopt a more reserved approach. Read more about this in Stefano Barbagallo newsletter and the latest highlights in #biglaw here.

This period however marks the first signs of improved activity in the junior recruitment market. In Australia, top-tier firms are actively seeking junior lawyers in Melbourne and Sydney. Additionally, in London, US law firms are looking for March 2024 qualifiers to expand their Private Equity, Funds and Leveraged Finance teams with aspiring lawyers trained at Magic or Silver Circle firms. If you are interested or know someone that would fit this criteria, we are actively looking for talent, and you can find more information on our dedicated page here.

Down Under, our team in Sydney continues to witness an increase in activity within Disputes, Environment & Planning, Real Estate, Major Projects, and Energy sectors. We are also collaborating with New Zealand lawyers seeking opportunities at prestigious Australian firms to advance their careers. Furthermore, various Australian-qualified associates are in the process of joining top-tier firms in Dublin. In New York, our team successfully facilitated the transition of a Canadian-qualified lawyer to an Am Law20 firm in record time, signifying a renewed interest in international associates. It's worth noting that only specific firms in the market are currently open to such international opportunities, underscoring the market's diversity.

Over in the U.S we have active roles in New York, L.A., Atlanta and Miami with the hottest practice areas being, Debt Finance (All levels), Restructuring (All levels), Investment Funds (Class of 2018+), Patent Litigation (Class of 2019+), Project Finance (All levels).

One of the most promising developments in our recruitment process is unfolding in London. Although scheduling initial interviews and partner meetings still require several weeks, we've noticed a significant uptick in the pace of the hiring process after the first interview, especially when candidates meet all the prerequisites. This has led to smoother and more efficient processes, and we're delighted to report that we've had an exceptionally active month in London, which is expected to extend into November.

If you are a lawyer looking to make a lateral move in time for the new year, pick up the phone to us today to learn more about your options.

Enjoy our latest resources below and have a great November!
