Oxitec Launches Sparks?, a Commercial Platform to Scale Dengue-Blocking Wolbachia Solution, Aiming to Protect One Billion People by 2040

Oxitec has?launched Sparks?, a new commercial platform to accelerate the global scale-up of Wolbachia replacement technology, a proven, sustainable method of limiting mosquitoes’ ability to transmit dengue.

Supported by a multi-million-dollar investment from the Gates Foundation, Sparks? will leverage Oxitec’s leading global R&D teams, manufacturing operations and distribution partnerships to rapidly scale Wolbachia supply and pursue access-enhancing pricing for communities most in need as set forth by World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.

Sparks? will complement Oxitec’s groundbreaking mosquito solution, Friendly? Aedes aegypti, which is the leading dengue vector suppression solution that effectively reduces disease-spreading mosquito populations.?

Djibouti Advances the Fight Against Malaria with Launch of First Full Pilot Season of Friendly? Mosquitoes in Africa, Targeting the Invasive Anopheles stephensi

In October, Djibouti launched the first full season of pilot releases of Friendly? Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes in Djibouti City, advancing the development of a targeted, sustainable solution to control the disease-spreading Anopheles stephensi. ?

This follows the first releases of Friendly? mosquitoes in Djibouti City in May 2024, the first genetically engineered mosquitoes to be released in East Africa.?

These releases will demonstrate how Friendly? Anopheles stephensi behave in Djiboutian urban communities, including where they disperse, how long they live, and their ability to mate with local females, paving the way for larger pilots focused on controlling populations of this dangerous mosquito in Djiboutian neighbourhoods.?

The City of Congonhas, Brazil, Deploying Oxitec’s Friendly? Aedes aegypti Solution, Reports Curtailed Dengue Spike and Suppression of Dengue-Spreading Mosquitoes

Amid one of the worst dengue outbreaks in Brazil's history, the city of Congonhas, once among the most severely affected in Minas Gerais, has seen a significantly reduced spike in dengue cases and recorded a decline in the population of dengue-carrying mosquitoes following the deployment of Oxitec’s Friendly? technology.

While neighboring cities experienced dengue case surges of up to 7,000% compared to previous years, Congonhas reported a comparatively lower increase of 299% in 2024. Additionally, the municipality's data indicated that Friendly? mosquitoes successfully suppressed the Aedes aegypti mosquito population, as well as the number of mosquito breeding sites.
