COP29 Takeaways: Carbon Capture and CO2 Recovery

At COP29, carbon capture was discussed as a crucial tool to combat climate change. Key highlights included:

• These discussions emphasized the need to scale carbon capture (CC) technologies, with a focus on advancing innovation to meet net-zero targets.
• Despite pledges to increase climate finance, experts highlighted the importance of greater investment in both large- and small-scale CC solutions (CCS).
• While large-scale CCS was the main talking point, the role of small and localized CO2 recovery systems, especially for industries such as craft brewing and winemaking, was recognized as important for creatin a decentralized sustainable impact.

Small-Scale Matters

The discussions centered around how large-scale carbon capture and storage deal with industrial emissions, but the importance of small-scale carbon capture solutions should not be overlooked. These systems enable individual businesses to take meaningful climate action while cutting costs and improving sustainability.

• Recovering CO2 directly at the point of emission eliminates the need for transportation and storage infrastructure. A study by the University of Winnipeg finds that for every kg of CO2 recovered, 2 kg are prevented from being released into the atmosphere.
• The versatility and flexibility of small-scale systems make them adaptable to a variety of industries, providing a tailored solution for many small businesses in craft beverage production and carbon capture.
• The cumulative effect of more businesses adopting small-scale CO2 recovery technologies can significantly contribute to global sustainability targets.

By implementing these solutions, small and medium-sized businesses support global efforts to meet the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, while ensuring long-term economic and environmental benefits.
