November News

The days are shorter, the nights are longer.

This is when many industries feel the temptation to “wind down” and take things slow.

They take their time, things are quieter, and hiring stops.

Let’s face it everyone leaves it until the new year to hire.

But this shouldn’t be the option you take.

Getting Ahead of the Competition

November and December are a notoriously quiet period for us recruiters.

With businesses closed for the period they naturally delay any hiring until the return in the New Year. And that makes sense when you first look at it.

However, you leave opportunities on the table if you don’t seize these moments.

So why not take advantage of quieter times and stand out from the crowd?

Think about it like this: If all the hiring stops/slows at this time of year - then what happens to the candidates?

They don’t disappear.

So here you have a pool of highly qualified and eager personnel waiting to get into a new role.

If you’re looking to hire new staff members, starting in December rather than January is fantastic.

Firstly, you can cherry pick candidates ahead of their competition.

It works to their benefit to have a secured job before Christmas (even if they don’t start) many people are usually using up the last of their leave making them free for interviews.

Conversely, January is always a huge boon and a manic time for recruiters - often scrambling around to pick up the slack of going quiet for the previous month to two months.

So why not put in more effective work in the quiet period than trying to beat the competition and saturation of the New Year?

You can save yourself a lot of headaches by being organised during winter.

Also with your competition slowing down efforts you have an opportunity to acquire the best talent for you and your business.

Overall the benefits are that you can work with and hire more qualified personnel with less hassle and competition.

Not only this, but with the quieter period happening in your own business you can take more time to make better decisions regarding who to hire.

Another fantastic bonus is that when you do make a hire you have more time for training.

You’ve probably already planned for no urgent or critical work to happen during this time.

This means you will have more time for staff training and inductions to take place as well as the ability to go into greater depth and also correct any “teething” issues.

Imagine the scenario - having a full complement of fully trained ready-to-go staff for the New Year with no mad dash headaches of trying to compete for talent at one of the peak times of the year.

Doesn’t that sound better?

UK Manufacturing Shrinking

UK manufacturing contracted at the start of the final quarter, as October saw output, new orders and employment all decline.

There were reports that difficult and uncertain market conditions led to increased caution among both manufacturers and their clients alike.

Alongside these factors, stocks of purchases also declined and suppliers' delivery times improved (traditionally a sign of weak demand).

Production fell for the eighth successive month in October, the most sustained sequence of unbroken contraction since 2008/09.

Need To Embrace Technology

Britain’s manufacturing sector is warning the UK risks falling behind its international rivals in the race to embrace cutting edge technologies such as AI and automation.

Both of these technologies are seen as vital to Britain’s industrial future, yet slow adoption hampers this.

The warning was made on the back of a major survey published by Make UK and Infor.

Engineering jobs are amongst hardest to fill

Engineering firms are losing out to fintech and IT in the recruitment race. While many companies are withdrawing job adverts due to economic worries engineering firms are doubling down.

Figures from data provider Adzuna show that engineering vacancies increased from 86,550 in January to 91,255 in June where all other vacancies across all industries slumped.

Jobs site Indeed reported that in June engineering vacancies were some of the hardest-to-fill roles. Veterinary surgeons topped the list, but mechanical engineers came second, electrical engineers fourth, civil engineers fifth and industrial engineers seventh.

Beware recruitment scams

In a survey this month, conducted by NatWest, three-quarters (74%) of people have been targeted by scams in the past year alone, and 80% of those surveyed are concerned that impersonation fraud may become harder to spot in the next five years due to the rise in AI.

Recruitment agencies are now being targeted by scammers posing as consultants from the company to try and con candidates out of money or parting with personal financial information.

Be careful out there and always double check who you are working with.
