November Edition: Embracing sustainability, how benefits enhance colleague well-being and strengthening disaster resilience for hurricane response

Presenting the trends, insights and emerging stories you need in this moment.

Embracing sustainability as a business imperative in a changing climate

Climate- and nature-related challenges can affect your people, physical assets and the communities in which you operate. Recognizing these risks, Marsh McLennan hosted a series of events at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, aimed at helping organizations explore effective strategies for tackling the financial impacts of climate change — and much more.

From resilience planning to the role of large corporates in advancing climate adaptation, our delegation, led by 达信 's Amy Barnes and 美世 's Cara Williams , helped lead?sessions on the latest trends and innovative solutions in climate resilience, empowering attendees with insights to make a tangible impact within and outside their organizations on climate risk.

Optimizing colleague benefits for enhanced well-being

In the face of rising medical costs and evolving health risks, employers and insurers must adapt their strategies to optimize value and ensure affordable healthcare for all. The insights from?Mercer Marsh Benefits’ Health Trends 2025?reveal pressing issues such as costly cancer claims, cardiovascular and metabolic health concerns and unmet mental health needs. However, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation.

As we navigate these complexities, it’s crucial to explore new plan management options and cost containment approaches. Innovative medical treatments, particularly for obesity and cancer, are reshaping the landscape of insurance claims, necessitating a proactive response from employers. To effectively balance evolving health risks with cost containment, we must engage in deeper dialogues with advisors and insurers.

Building Resilience: A collective responsibility

In the wake of hurricanes Helene and Milton, the recent roundtable hosted by the US Department of the Treasury highlighted the critical role of the financial sector in enhancing disaster resilience. As Marsh McLennan’s Daniel Kaniewski noted, “When it comes to resilience, there’s no silver bullet.”

The conversation underscored the necessity of integrating insurance, preparedness and hazard mitigation. Kaniewski emphasized that true resilience stems from collaboration across public, private and non-profit sectors. He pointed out the importance of linking risk transfer with risk reduction, stating, “Only by reducing financial and physical impacts can resilience be achieved.”

As we move forward, it’s clear that we all share the responsibility of fostering resilience. By incentivizing our clients and communities to invest in resilience, we can collectively reduce the impacts of disasters and support those affected. Together, we can build a more resilient future.

Thanks for sharing and highlighting everyone’s need to keep resiliency at the forefront of both public and private operations. It’s about being prepared, financially and operational protecting people first everyone needs to address daily not after a major catastrophe.
