November Article - 1 Candidate, 1 Offer

Can it be done? Can you interview just 1 candidate and hire them? Absolutely.

I'll caution though, it isn't easy to do this. You need structure, process, strategy and a really well trained interview team. The premise of this concept is that by having all of that in place, you can identify the perfect fit for your position. If you find that perfect fit, why wouldn't you make the hire?

It all starts with definition. Defining exactly the type of position you are hiring for and what the ideal profile is. I've learned throughout my career that you need to spend much more time at the beginning of the process, with the hiring Manager as you develop the position and what the ideal profile is. I get super deep and ask a ton of detailed questions. This has actually led to the position title changing and sometimes even the responsibilities. My knowledge of the market, the talent out there and what those candidates look for, has often led to those changes being made.

We now have a well defined position and who we want. This is where you develop a recruitment strategy. How are you going to search and where? What's the interview process look like? Is your interview process allowing you to effectively evaluate your candidates? If you have a strong recruitment strategy and can evaluate candidates as effectively as possible, you can hire the only person you interview.

Think about it, you've found a candidate that checks off every single box. You've found a candidate who has received a 5/5 rating from all 5 interviewers they have met with. They've blown you away throughout the recruitment process. Why wouldn't you hire them? I've had situations like this before where the hiring Manager still says to me, "I want to see more candidates". I ask why? They've either identified something within the interview process that does not sit well with them or they don't have an answer and we hire that candidate.

If you do it all correctly, you can interview 1 candidate and hire them.

Respectfully, I’d like to highlight that for the Senior Director, Creative Development position at Masterclass, there were over 1500 applications received solely through LinkedIn, which seems like an overwhelming number. As a candidate who submitted a resume and genuinely met all the specified criteria, for some reasons, unfortunately, I never had the opportunity for an interview. Reading the article sheds light on the selection process.

Justin, I respectfully disagree with your article. The notion that only one person can meet all criteria overlooks the potential of multiple qualified individuals. Not all criteria are equally crucial, and decisions about choosing only one candidate shouldn’t be unilateral. A candidate with a strong skill set and relevant experience could excel without checking off every single box. Hiring managers should have the flexibility to assess based on a combination of skills, experience, and personality. From a candidate’s perspective, equal opportunities are crucial to prevent biases.
