November 22, 1963
A solid black horse stalked the caisson
inverted boots at his side...
A saber in a sheath, where a fallen
leader used to ride.
And on the wind a skillful drummer
struck a mournful beat
The tune pierced the hearts of thousands
who came respectfully...and lined the streets.
The event made strange confusion,
no contrast, in the dark from the sun.
Sleep so vital, yet somehow uneventful
in the face of what one shot had done!
And now a widow watches, a small child
salutes, a volley ripples across the lawn
sending its' message, unyielding and resolute
where others too have long since gone.
A flame is lit, and a nation mourns, more
than the loss of a favorite son...
Matters of history are now left here
by the side of others at Arlington.
