November 21 - World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, held on the third Sunday of November each year, is also an important day for us here at Commsignia. We pause for a moment to remember what inspires us to work hard day after day. By embracing Vision Zero’s goal of avoiding every single road fatality, we are motivated to develop the best state-of-the-art traffic safety technologies.?

More than a million people are killed on the roads worldwide and tens of millions suffer from serious injuries, many of them bearing lifelong consequences.

Over the past decade, the number of road traffic fatalities has been falling in Europe, and roads in the EU are the safest in the world. The focus here, however, is on urban road safety, as most of the fatalities in the EU involve vulnerable road users: pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.?

Statistics show that the U.S. has much more to do in the area of traffic safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported the largest ever increase of road fatalities in the first half of 2021: more than 20 thousand people have died on American roads. The NHTSA also released a report about driver behavior that indicates that speeding and traveling without wearing a seatbelt happens more often now than during the pandemic in 2020.

According to the World Health Organization, road accidents kill more kids aged 5-14 than anything else.

The United Nations has set a target of halving the number of road deaths and injuries by 2030, but today it is important to remember that, in fact, every single road accident can be avoided. In 2021, the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims focuses on the reduction of traffic speed. This is something worth paying attention to. While many different technologies will help us achieve the goal of zero road fatalities, we all need to drive slower, safer, and avoid distractions.
