Celebrating Veteran Resilience: A Story of Impact and Hope

In honor of veterans everywhere, we want to express our deepest gratitude to you and all the brave individuals who have served our country. At Disability Advocates of Kent County, it’s a privilege to work alongside veterans like you, who continue to show incredible resilience as you navigate life after service.

This month, we’re sharing a special story about team member Derrick Collins, a veteran who found renewed independence through a Veterans Administration apprenticeship program and eventually became part of our dedicated staff. You’ll also learn about the range of services available to veterans and their families, ensuring you receive the support needed to lead a self-directed life.

Whether you’re a veteran, a family member, or a supporter, we invite you to read on, discover our impact, and explore the resources available to your veteran community.

Thank you for being a part of our mission and joining us in honoring those who have served.

Derrick's Story:

Derrick’s journey with us began through Chapter 31, an apprenticeship program supported by the Veterans Administration designed to help veterans facing challenges in readjustment. Mentored by Disability Advocates staff, Derrick rotated across departments, including Information & Referral, Workforce Development, and Occupational Therapy. Derrick's transition was accelerated by learning to support others in their journeys.

The peer support training funded by the VA played a key role in helping Derrick regain his sense of purpose. After completing 8 months of apprenticeship with us, he continued in another area before returning to accept a job offer from our team. Today, in his role as Independent Living Manager, Derrick offers unique understanding of the issues veterans faces and commits his energy to smoothing the way forward for others like him. Derrick’s story is a testament to the power of support, community, and the opportunities that can arise through collaboration and determination. Thank you, Derrick!
