A democratic foundation for electoral AI?
Artificial Intelligence's impact on elections is a hot topic, with concerns over its potential to disrupt democratic processes. While AI-fuelled disinformation is a concern in 2024, the reality is more nuanced. AI is already being used to improve electoral management, but its potential for misuse is real. International IDEA’s ‘AI for Electoral Actors’ project aims to help electoral management bodies and civil society navigate this new terrain.
Climate deliberation in the Global South
Why are citizen assemblies gaining traction to boost citizen engagement and tackle tough policy issues like climate change? A recent discussion at the Democracy R&D conference explored how these assemblies are being used in the Global South. Experts from Brazil, Colombia and India shared their experiences, highlighting the importance of localizing these assemblies, addressing the needs of marginalized communities and integrating them into existing participatory frameworks.??

2024 Election super-cycle: A key moment for gender equality?
Despite a global ‘super-cycle’ of elections in 2024, progress on women’s political representation has been uneven, with stagnation in the global share of female parliamentarians and alarming increases in violence against women in politics.
This year’s mixed results are a stark reminder that achieving true democracy requires addressing both formal and informal barriers to women’s participation, and a global effort to protect their safety and inclusion in politics.
