Workers believe new technologies make their jobs safer. A recent survey of over 9,000 workers across nine countries shows a shift in how automation is perceived in relation to workplace safety. Nearly 45% of respondents expect technologies like AI to improve safety, particularly in high-risk industries such as manufacturing. This reflects a significant change in attitude, with workers viewing automation not just as a potential job threat, but as a valuable tool for reducing exposure to dangerous tasks and enhancing overall safety. Workplace injuries cost companies over $13 billion annually. The real financial impact, however, comes from indirect costs — work disruption and lost productivity — which can exceed twice the direct costs. Investing in ergonomics pays off: for every dollar spent on safety, companies see an average return of $4.41. According to a study by The Ohio State University, ergonomics interventions have led to a 64% reduction in musculoskeletal disorders, a 71% drop in injury rates, and a 77% decrease in lost workdays.
