November 2024 │ COP29 must fix Article 6 carbon markets

Dear reader,

As news of the re-election of Donald Trump in the United States sends shockwaves around the world, not least amongst environmentalists, we gear up for the latest UN climate conference, COP29.

In this edition, we explore what is at stake in Baku and the urgent need to fix Article 6 to ensure that UN carbon markets function as an effective climate instrument rather than a glorified greenwashing tool. You can find out more on our COP29 landing page.

Don’t forget to follow us on social media, including our new Instagram page, for updates on the ground from Baku.

We also delve into the social justice dimension of climate action. How can we make the forthcoming Emissions Trading System for road transport and buildings (ETS2) both effective for the climate and fair to the vulnerable in society?

That question is central to the new CMW-led LIFE Effect project and is the theme for the latest ETS Talk on 14 November.

We also explore the social ramifications of the vague notion of ‘residual emissions’ and put forward ideas for sharpening the definition of these unavoidable emissions to make them fairer and to ensure that carbon removals are used in a way that serves society as a whole, and not only the wealthiest corporations and individuals.

In a similar vein, we share the blueprint drawn up by a civil society coalition for effective EU carbon removals policies and make the case for a separate target for carbon removals.

Best wishes,

The Carbon Market Watch team

We also must fix what a forest definition is. In Switzerland the LFI defines a forest >20% canopy and 80% can be something else. Same with age group. That is no forest. Compare it with 60-99% canopy (primary forest) or UNESCO forest >40% canopy. Look at the definitions to heal the world. If you plant one or two different species that is also no biodiversity. Real biodiversity comes from wilderness! The forestry industry controls executive, legislative and judicative. And nobody independently is govern them. How can we leave our valuable forests to an industry group?
