Ukrainian Canadian Congress
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) is the voice of Canada’s Ukrainian community.
Dear friends,
It’s been a busy fall, and our community has been working hard! November – lystopad – is the month when the leaves start falling from the trees, the days get shorter and the nights get longer.
In October we commemorated and remembered the First World War Internment Operations and their legacy for our community, and you can see a report on events below.
This month we will be commemorating the anniversary of the Holodomor with many services and commemorative events taking place across Canada. Please send us information about events in your community so that we widely share the information on our website. This year, Holodomor Memorial Day will be commemorated on November 23.
Last week a community delegation was invited to the Ministerial Conference on the Human Dimension co-hosted by Canada, Ukraine and Norway in Montreal. The Conference, which was attended by over 70 countries and international organizations, was dedicated to returning Ukrainian children, civilians and POWs home from Russian captivity. The UCC Québec Provincial Council hosted a community meeting with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha.
We are also looking ahead to February when the Invictus Games takes places in Vancouver and Whistler. Our community looks forward to supporting the incredible athletes on Team Ukraine!
Sincere congratulations to UCC National President Alexandra Chyczij and UCC Manitoba Provincial Council President Joan Lewandosky, who have both been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of their significant contributions to Canada and to the Ukrainian Canadian community.
Slava Ukraini!

UCC holds successful Advocacy Day on Parliament Hill
Delegates representing Ukrainian organizations from across Canada participated in Ukrainian Canadian Congress Advocacy Day on Parliament Hill on October 21.
UCC delegations met with over 50 Members of Parliament and Senators. The UCC advocated for Canadian support for Ukrainian Victory which requires increased military and economic support for Ukraine, a tougher response to Russia’s genocidal war against Ukraine,?and continued support for Ukrainian displaced persons.
“We will soon mark 1000 days since Russia launched a full-scale genocidal war against Ukraine. Ukraine can – and will – defeat Russia. But in order for Ukraine to win quickly, Canada and allies must substantially increase support and take stronger measures against Russia,” stated Alexandra Chyczij, National President of the UCC.?
The briefing note that UCC delegations presented to MPs and Senators is available here:
UCC delegations met with the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada; the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance,?several Cabinet Ministers and Liberal Party MPs. Delegations also met with Shadow Ministers and Conservative Party MPs, the Bloc Québécois, New Democratic Party and several Senators. To learn more about this event please visit our website.
Marking 1,000 Days of War: November 19
On November 19, we will mark 1,000 days since the start of Russia's full-scale war in Ukraine. This is a solemn moment to reflect on the sacrifices made and to stand in solidarity with Ukraine.
We encourage you to contact your local elected officials and ask them to share a statement of support for Ukraine on social media or other channels.
If you are organizing any events or initiatives to mark this day, please let us know so we can share the details with our community and media. You can reach us at [email protected].
UCC President addresses threat of Russian interference, disinformation
Alexandra Chyczij, National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) visited Ottawa on October 1-2 to address the threat of Russian interference and disinformation in Canada’s democracy.
The House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security (SECU) is holding hearings in the wake of revelations in an unsealed US federal indictment?which revealed that Canadian companies and individuals are involved in a Russian disinformation influence conspiracy run by RT employees.
Testifying at the SECU Committee, Chyczij presented the Ukrainian Canadian community’s recommendations on actions the Canadian government needs to take to respond to Russia’s interference and disinformation campaigns in Canada.

National Internment Commemoration Day
On October 28, Canada marked National Internment Commemoration Day.
From 1914-1920, 8,579 Ukrainians and other Europeans, who were branded ‘enemy aliens,’ were imprisoned in 24 internment camps across Canada. Men, women, and children suffered during Canada’s First National Internment Operations, not because of anything they had done, but only because of who they were and where they had come from.
In 2014, the Endowment Council of the Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund and the UCC Internment Committee adopted resolutions designating October 28 as National Internment Commemoration Day in Canada. On this day, we remember the victims of this injustice. And we are united in our resolve to bring an end to prejudice and discrimination, wherever they may appear.
Thank you to our community for marking this important day of commemoration in their communities.

DONORS CORNER
How deep does your love go?
In a country as big and diverse as Canada, the physical landscape is vast and for the first time in UCC history, there are UCC Branches from coast to coast to coast. The 2022 Triennial Congress in Winnipeg brought people together that otherwise could not have attended, if it wasn’t for the generous sponsors that funded the Triennial Congress Travel Fund. This allowed Ukrainian Canadians to attend a Triennial for the first time. These individuals returned home, planted seeds, and with UCC’s support now, only two years later, these areas of Canada have joined the UCC family.??
As you know, UCC is a non-profit and funded by our contributions. My husband and I updated our Wills last year and this made us reflect on what is meaningful in our lives and what kind of legacy do we want to leave. Our lawyer instructed us to go home and “think about it and talk to your children about your wishes”. This exercise provided an opportunity for reflection. In today’s fast-paced society, reflection is something that we have to make time for. We are too busy running from place to place, appointment to appointment, and not surprisingly, many of our newly-retired friends and family have busier schedules than when they were employed. We all seem to be running in a race, but where is the finish line?...
