In this month’s newsletter, I highlight our involvement in?a number of?initiatives that I hope you will find of interest. There are new announcements and publications, such as our partnership with Innovate Cities and our new paper published in?iScience.?
There is also much to share on the events front. While we continue to offer our monthly webinars, we have also started our regular training courses. We were getting many questions about data sharing and data access that it made sense to organize?all ofthe information in a structured course format.
It is also quite exciting to be participating and connecting with colleagues and clients at in-person events and conferences, in North America and other parts of the world. If you or members of your team are attending any of these, it would be great to connect, so please reach out.?
Last month, we held a 1? day?Training Course on Practical De-identification Methods?for Health Data in New York City. It was a success and there seems to be great interest in this topic, so we are organizing another one to take place on February 6 & 7, 2023, this time in San Francisco. Details are available on our News and Events page. For more information and to register, click here.

- Join us for our next webinar, on Dec. 1, entitled?Evaluating Privacy Risks in Synthetic Data Using Membership Disclosure. Membership disclosure is when an adversary learns that a target individual is in the training dataset based on the information in the synthetic dataset. It is one of the key disclosure risks in our synthetic data privacy framework. Our team?will discuss how to measure membership disclosure in synthetic data. The focus will be on our recent JAMIA Open paper on the topic and there will also be a broader review. We will share the reasoning behind the metric we propose, as well as how to use it and interpret it. For more information and to register for this free webinar, click here.
- Also on December 1, we’ll be speaking at the A Bright Future for Child Health in Canada Conference in Ottawa. We'll participate on a panel entitled?Creating a Pathway for Health Care Commercialization. The discussion will offer insights, guidance and challenges related to start-ups in the health data space. For information about the event click here.
- On December 8, we are speaking at The Data Effect: Data for Canada’s Health.?In our presentation, entitled?Responsible Access to Health Data Using Synthetic Data Generation,?we will give an overview of synthetic data – what it is, how it’s generated, how its privacy and utility can be validated, and ultimately how this privacy enhancing technology addresses data re-use and sharing problems in healthcare. We’re also proud to be sponsoring this event alongside Google. For information, click here.
- Just in case you missed it, on November 3rd?the Canadian Anonymization Network (CANON) held an online event entitled?Legislative Reform Roundtable: The impact of the “anonymized” and “de-identified” data provisions within Bill C-27. A recording is now available and you can watch it here.
