November 1, 2023

During October, Ailevon Pacific had the privilege of attending & contributing to the agenda of the New Zealand Airports Association Hui (gathering), which was focused on: Working Together for a Connected New Zealand.

?We took the view that connecting New Zealand, like many economies, means different things to different people and organisations, and it wasn’t a simple linear assumption or objective.? Rather, it related to a range of stakeholders in different ways.? It wasn’t a purely domestic audience, or regional (trans-Tasman) audience that could be engaged.? Indeed, globally, connecting any economy has benefits.? Measuring performance or a peer assessment is crucial to understanding what could be achieved, or should be.? In this month’s analysis, we look at some of the slides presented, and consider their relativity to each other and regionally – where is performance yet to really deliver, or will hopefully soon, gather momentum to fulfill a destinations/airports potential.

This newsletter is published each month, on the first Wednesday of the month.? Please share with your colleagues, and request, by reply - that they be added to this specially curated circulation list.

DATA Insight: regionally – who’s leading the pack?

With its picturesque views and abundance of activities all in one small location, Queenstown (ZQN) is outperforming significantly.? With Virgin Australia resuming services, and being the only destination in New Zealand for the airline to return to thus far, on top of being a very desirable place to visit – capacity in ZQN has powered ahead of other key city hubs.? In Australia, MEL leads the pack.

As at July, New Zealand had seen some recovery of global connectivity.? New airline entrants, and new services – especially to North America continues to grow.? More recently, that has been tempered with HA reducing services and moving to a seasonal operation.

?Regionally – there is an explosion of new growth – unsurprisingly, as distant countries and economies are reconnected.? As has been the case for decades, new connection and city pairs continue to rise, as the net growth of new services started, proves we are being more and more connected.? In the Pacific, that has certainly been the case, as distant and remote destinations become better served.

From Australia, airlines continue to add services, as the market remains extremely resilient, and the desire to travel remains top of the agenda for households.? Although – in recent days newly started services by Bamboo Airways will cease soon, having only recently started service to Australia since the pandemic.
