SDA Readies for Second Award for Tranche 2, After York Space Systems’ Win
October 24, 2023
The?U.S. Space Force’s Space Development Agency (SDA) expects to award a second contract, possibly next week, for the Tranche 2 Transport Layer-Alpha satellites. This comes after last week SDA Director Derek Tournear said that?York Space Systems?won a $615 million firm-fixed-price Other Transaction Authorities (OTA) contract to build 62 of the 100 Alpha satellites.
The latter satellites are to be able to transmit beyond line-of-sight Link 16 data to military forces from space.
The full $615 million is contingent upon York Space Systems earning “an on-time delivery incentive built into the agreement,” SDA said.

Zakaria Mahmud, professor at Lake Superior State University (LSSU), said?the school’s new space technician program is expected to provide an “open door” for students ready to enter Michigan’s burgeoning high-tech space industry.
That includes Canadian students enticed by the field’s lucrative, six-figure salaries.?
“The space industries are booming,” Mahmud said. “Revenue is growing…and there's now quite a good job market.”
The Sault Ste. Marie. Mich.-based school welcomed its?first cohort of six students to the Introduction of Space Systems program this fall.
In 2022, Mahmud was picked to spearhead LSSU’s Space Missions and Operations Certification program, part of a larger, statewide push by government and community groups to generate a pipeline of skilled workers in the Upper Peninsula.
The push began following NASA’s decision to?open up space exploration ?– including working in the International Space Station – to private business.?

About a year and a half after signing a Space Act Agreement with NASA to develop a commercial space station, Northrop Grumman formally withdrew from its solo plans in order to partner with Nanoracks, a subsidiary of Voyager Space.
Under this new venture, Northrop Grumman will provide cargo transportation services for the commercial space station dubbed “Starlab.” To that end, the Cygnus spacecraft will be upgraded to allow for autonomous docking with the future space station.
It’s a feature currently available on the SpaceX Cargo Dragon spacecraft as well as Roscosmos’ Progress spacecraft. Currently, Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus spacecraft is berthed to the International Space Station using the Canadarm2 robotic arm.
“This collaboration is a major step forward for the Starlab program,” said Dylan Taylor, Chairman and CEO of Voyager Space in a statement. “Northrop Grumman’s technical capability and proven success in cargo resupply services will play a pivotal role as we accelerate Starlab’s development. We’re proud to be supporting advanced docking systems that push LEO transportation operations forward and advance critical technology for deep space exploration. We are thrilled to have Northrop Grumman on our Starlab team.”

The US government has issued its first ever fine to a company for leaving space junk orbiting the Earth.
The Federal Communications Commission?fined Dish Network $150,000 (£125,000) for failing to move an old satellite far enough away from others in use.
The company admitted liability over its EchoStar-7 satellite and agreed to a "compliance plan" with the FCC.
Space junk is made up bits of tech that are in orbit around the Earth but are no longer in use, and risk collisions.
Officially called space debris, it includes things like old satellites and parts of spacecraft.
The FCC said that Dish's satellite posed a potential risk to other satellites orbiting the Earth at its current altitude.
