Rocket Lab stock drops after first satellite launch failure in more than two years

Michael Sheetz

TUE, SEP 19

Rocket Lab stock fell after the company suffered its first launch failure in more than two years early Tuesday morning.

The company confirmed its uncrewed 41st Electron rocket launch — lifting off from New Zealand and carrying the Acadia 2 satellite for San Francisco-based Capella Space — failed about two minutes and 30 seconds into the flight. Rocket Lab said it has begun working with the Federal Aviation Administration on investigating the root cause of the issue, which appeared to happen around the time the rocket’s first and second stages separated.

“We are deeply sorry to our partners Capella Space for the loss of the mission,” Rocket Lab said in a statement.

Shares of Rocket Lab fell about 7.5% in trading to close at $4.66 a share. The stock is up nearly 24% for the year.

USAF and FAA Deny Varda Reentry and Recovery Permission

By Rachael Zisk

SEPTEMBER 18, 2023

Varda’s first in-space manufacturing capsule can’t come back down to Earth.

On Friday, TechCrunch reported that the US Air Force denied Varda Space Industries permission to use a Utah recovery range, and the FAA also denied a reentry license, leaving the company’s orbiting pharmaceutical factory waiting in orbit.

“The request to use the Utah Test and Training Range for the landing location was not granted at this time due to the overall safety, risk and impact analysis,” an FAA spokesperson said in a statement to TechCrunch. “In a separate process, the FAA has not granted a reentry license. All organizations continue working to explore recovery options.”

L3Harris exploring supplier partnerships for its satellite business

Space sector president Kelle Wendling: ‘We’re talking to all bus suppliers’

September 18, 2023

WASHINGTON — Like other companies that build satellites for the U.S. government, L3Harris Technologies is looking for suppliers that?can meet the technical and schedule demands of national security programs.

Defense and intelligence agencies want to take advantage of commercial space products but they also have unique demands, “so supply chain is a tough problem,” Kelle Wendling, president of space systems at L3Harris, told SpaceNews in a recent interview.

Schedule setbacks caused by supplier issues delayed the delivery of four missile-detection tracking satellites L3Harris built for the U.S. Space Force’s Space Development Agency.?

These satellites will be part of a large network of sensors in low Earth orbit known as the Transport Layer. They were projected to ride to orbit along with other SDA Tranche 0 satellites in two recent launches but they were not ready. They are now on track to launch in October on USSF-124 with two Missile Defense Agency infrared sensor satellites.
