Infosys France - Zoom sur Cherian Mathew (en anglais)
Introduce yourself
I have been working with Infosys since 2004 and delivering solutions for this specific aerospace client since 2006. While currently working as portfolio manager in Aircraft systems, my 16 years of experience in aerospace domain means my role at Infosys is closely connected with airplanes. My role today, at Infosys Toulouse, takes benefit of the knowledge gained in various domains like CAD design, configuration management, functional design combined with activities in R&T, business development and service delivery. As a portfolio manager my core focus is to ensure that we deliver solutions to clients considering all aspects of business viability, user desirability and technical feasibility. My role also implies to keep my team motivated to work for a market leader client without forgetting that at the end of the day its people who matter as much as processes.
What accomplishment at Infosys are you most proud of?
Having the opportunity to work with our aerospace client early on, I was able to contribute to Infosys’ growth story over recent years thanks to pursuit initiatives. It was also a delight to support the on boarding of new team members by setting up training platforms allowing our teams to adapt to client needs rapidly. What was equally important in this endeavour, embracing the subtleties of culture which I could share with both my Indian and French colleagues allowing us to work as ONE team.
Who / what inspires you the most?
Well… It’s a philosophical question... :)
I do get inspired by everyone, from my 6 months old son who can smile for no reason to a chef who can instil passion through cooking. While today I don’t aspire to be like any particular role model, I do try to learn from others. I do enjoy working with highly motivated and creative people, people who embrace the ‘be more’ philosophy as an individual. I am inspired by people who can leave you with a lingering thought after you talk to the person. Clearly there is food for thought when you meet such brilliant people. During some pursuits, I am inspired by colleagues who have conviction in thoughts and come up with original ideas. I am also inspired by people who are passionate about what they do. Like today the medical staff who work for humanity during the COVID crisis. Inspiration necessarily doesn’t have to come from a person with a game changing idea and I believe that one can find it anywhere if you look around well.
What is your secret talent?
I used to be a blogger and used to have a reasonable readership at some point of time. I used to publish stories, humorous incidents, anecdotes and sketches. I do also love cooking and try different cuisines but can get a bit finicky if things are not ‘bien mis en place’, as we say in French :)
What are the 3 reasons why you joined Infosys?
I got the offer letter from Infosys while in college during campus recruitment. Infosys was the middle class Indian dream back then and everyone vied for a place. It would have been akin to asking what the entrée, plat and dessert is before reserving a table served by Paul Bocuse. To be honest I really did not think much back then…
How would you describe the values / culture of Infosys?
Being an old-timer I can say that culture of Infosys has evolved over time… Just like a person who takes time to learn and become confident of what he/she can do. Infosys instilled and still does on a strong educational culture to up-skill continuously. Today the culture at Infosys is based on those strong foundations allowing us to be confident about what we can deliver. Our learning skills are our biggest assets. While particularly talking about Infosys France, I love the aspect that we are truly multi-cultural, mutually respectful and embracing diversities. These are important values which serves as extension outside of work.
What advice would you give to future Infosys employees?
There is quote by Shashi Tharoor “If America is a melting-pot, then to me India is a thali, a selection of sumptuous dishes in different bowls. Each tastes different, and does not necessarily mix with the next, but they belong together on the same plate, and they complement each other in making the meal a satisfying repast.” Infosys is in many ways a microcosm of this description. You will meet individuals with different ideas and thought processes but they belong together on same values and they complement each other at work in making every day at Infosys an enriching experience.
If you have been with Infosys for at least 1 year, how has the business changed?
There is less rigidity and more willingness to embrace new ideas as Infosys is getting bolder and confident especially in the European markets where clients are now recognizing the benefits of working with Infosys.
