In this edition of our bi-weekly newsletter, we focus on a critical and often overlooked factor affecting children's malnutrition in Colombia: the level of parental education, especially among mothers. For many Colombian children, limited family resources are only part of the challenge when it comes to receiving proper nutrition. Lack of education among parents significantly contributes to feeding practices that fail to meet children’s developmental needs, leaving long-lasting effects on their physical and mental growth.
The Education and Nutrition Connection
In underserved Colombian communities, the majority of parents—especially mothers—often have very limited formal education. Many have not completed high school and are unfamiliar with nutritional best practices that can support a child’s optimal growth and development. This knowledge gap, compounded by economic hardships, means that balanced diets become a secondary priority. Families that are unaware of the importance of varied food groups tend to prepare meals centered on carbohydrates, as they are affordable and filling, but these lack essential vitamins and minerals.
Lack of understanding of proper nutrition and access to information on available resources lead to diet imbalances that can profoundly impact children. Inadequate nutrient intake, specifically a lack of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and other vital food groups, can impair cognitive development, immune function, and overall physical health in young children, setting them on a trajectory of lifelong disadvantage.
NEACOL’s Approach: Education as a Pillar for Nutrition
At NEACOL, we recognize that promoting children's health through adequate nutrition requires more than just food donations—it requires empowering parents with the knowledge to make informed dietary choices for their children. With this mission in mind, we support programs that emphasize nutritional education, equipping parents and caregivers with insights into the importance of a balanced diet and practical strategies for incorporating a variety of foods, even on a tight budget.
NEACOL’s initiatives work to bridge this knowledge gap by collaborating with local partners in Colombia to implement workshops, provide nutritional guidance, and distribute educational materials. These programs are designed to help parents learn about essential nutrients and food groups, encouraging them to diversify their families’ diets to promote long-term health benefits.

Why This Issue Matters
Children represent Colombia’s future, yet many are falling behind due to nutritional deficiencies that are preventable with the right educational support. Malnutrition has deep, far-reaching impacts on both physical and mental health, affecting a child’s ability to learn, socialize, and thrive. By addressing educational gaps in nutrition, we not only improve children’s health today but also equip parents with the knowledge and skills needed to support their families in the long run.
