Nourishing Britain: Insights from Henry Dimbleby’s New Political Manual

Last week, Henry Dimbleby, co-founder of Leon and author of the National Food Strategy, released his latest work, Nourishing Britain – A Political Manual for Improving the Nation’s Health. This significant publication delves into the challenges and opportunities within the UK food system, providing a roadmap for addressing pressing diet-related health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

The UK’s Troubling Food Environment

At the core of Dimbleby’s analysis is the troubling reality that the UK’s food environment is a primary driver of poor health outcomes. Over 60% of calories consumed in the UK come from highly processed foods, which play a significant role in the country’s growing obesity crisis and related illnesses. Low-income groups are hit hardest, as the affordability gap between unhealthy and healthy food options perpetuates health inequalities.

The Government’s Track Record on Public Health Policy

Reflecting on the government’s track record, Dimbleby highlights the limited success of past efforts. Over the years, 14 different obesity strategies have been introduced, yet many have faltered due to inconsistent implementation and a lack of sustained commitment.

However, there are notable exceptions. The Soft Drinks Industry Levy, also known as the sugar tax, is one of the most significant achievements, encouraging manufacturers to reduce sugar content in beverages and proving the effectiveness of well-designed regulation.

Mixed Results of Other Interventions

Other interventions, such as bans on junk food advertising and initiatives like Universal Infant Free School Meals, have shown mixed results. Dimbleby notes that their impact often depends on the quality of execution and whether political momentum can be maintained over the long term.

Short-Term Political Priorities vs. Long-Term Vision

A recurring theme in the manual is the difficulty of aligning short-term political priorities with the long-term vision required to address public health challenges effectively.

Focus on the Mechanics of Policymaking

One of the standout aspects of Nourishing Britain is its focus on the mechanics of policymaking. Rather than prescribing specific solutions, Dimbleby emphasises the importance of inter-departmental collaboration, evidence-based policymaking, and persistence in overcoming structural and political barriers.

Drawing on insights from politicians and experts, the manual offers a practical guide to navigating the complex landscape of public health reform.

A Wake-Up Call and Blueprint for Action

Dimbleby’s work serves as both a wake-up call and a blueprint for action. It underscores that meaningful change requires more than ambition—it demands a coordinated, long-term approach and a willingness to tackle resistance head-on.

An Essential Read for Food and Health Advocates

Nourishing Britain is an essential read for anyone invested in the future of food and health in the UK. It provides both a critical analysis of the current food system and the tools necessary to drive real, systemic change. The nation’s health depends on it.

Henry has really put his finger on the issues - but as you say Elephants have difficulty jumping and the profit/competition drive to more and more super processed is a huge issue for our food and health.
