Notice these Red Flags before saying Yes!

Notice these Red Flags before saying Yes!

We naturally get excited when we get an offer that seems like our dream job. However, being overwhelmed at the time, we miss significant red flags that lead us to disappointments, later depression, or sometimes to quitting the job.?From having a bad feeling about a job interview to receiving a job offer that doesn't feel right, there are plenty of reasons to be extra cautious before you commit to accepting a job offer.

The truth is that you're interviewing your prospective employer just as much as they're interviewing you. And, if they're waving more red flags than at a matador convention, chances are you'll soon regret taking the job. So be vigilant!

Red flags differ for each employee based on their current values, priorities, and goals. For example, eager to make a dent in my career in my 20s, I didn't mind the weekend work. But for those with young families, it was unbearable. Nevertheless, some very obvious red flags in the job search are easy to detect, like being asked to spend your money up front or learning that employees are doing overtime.

I want to highlight a few red flags I have experienced in my career and share them here so people in the middle of a new job search can benefit from them.

1- The workplace ambiance doesn't feel appealing

When we go for an interview, from stepping in & to stepping out of the organization, we get multiple chances to observe and feel the environment. Consider it a red flag if you see a dirty and nonfunctional reception or a rude receptionist and staff with no courtesy to offer you a cup of coffee while waiting or during the interview because it tells a lot about the firm's senior management.

2- High turnover?

Usually, the interviewer asks, "why do you want to take up this role?" Before this question comes your way, I suggest ask them why this position is vacant. For example, if it seems like retaining a promising talent is tough and they have multiple vacancies. Then, probe more profoundly, you might only get some of the truth, but you will have enough reasons to make the right decision.

3- HR or Hiring Manager failed to entail your JD

Please keep it in mind to get your written JD before accepting the offer. For your sanity & success, get as much clarity as possible about the role during your hiring process. It's my pet peeve, but unfortunately, it’s a frequent practice in our work culture that employers expect you to do others' jobs too. I am just speaking from experience.

4-Future Promises?

Another red flag is future promises like you will get a raise soon, etc. Be rational while finalizing your deal, and don't rely on future contracts. Sometimes recruiters make fake promises to entice the agreement and then rebuff it.

5- Rushing or taking too long in Hiring?

Hiring should take reasonable time. It should be good enough that both parties can gather enough information. If the firm is delaying it and causing trouble, take it as a red flag. If they are behaving ruthlessly at the time, then wonder how difficult it would be for you to work at the toxic place.

6- Culture clash.?

Plenty of research shows that alignment with culture helps employees be more effective. While you shouldn't change who you are to fit in, explore the unwritten norms and rules during the hiring process to understand if it feels like a welcoming place to work for you. Even the seemingly perfect job can be a nightmare. Culture is deep-rooted and hard to change, so ask yourself if you want to spend time doing your best work or using your energy to fight the system.

7- Contrived & Rigid interviewer

Interviewer behavior is a big red flag that you should pay attention to if the person is using his phone while taking an interview, not letting you complete your sentence, or hyper bombarding his queries to make you uncomfortable; then it's a disrespectful way. I recently interviewed at one of the lubricants distributors and found out why they are still struggling after being in the market for 25 years. Your top management mindset is vital in setting and achieving higher goals.

Lastly, keep your spidey senses active while taking up the offer. Although above mentioned red flags are very few, there are many more. The key to excelling in recognizing the red flags is your gut feeling. If something is not feeling right, then it's not right. So trust yourself and let it go!?
