Bioplastics are plastic materials that are either bio-based, biodegradable, or both. Contrary to popular knowledge, not all bioplastics are biodegradable. That’s because the biodegradation of these materials depends on their chemical structure and the location and temperature where the bioplastics may end up to. Moreover, not all biodegradable plastics are compostable. Biodegradable plastics may be chemically engineered to decompose in soil or water while compostable plastics break down into compost under certain conditions—they must decompose at a rate similar to the other materials being composted and must not leave any toxic residue. These standards are successfully met by ECOSTAR.??
