Nothing But The Truth - The memoir of an unlikely lawyer

The Secret Barrister strikes again with yet another absolutely funny, enlightening and truthful take on the justice system of England and Wales. They help us understand the intricoes of the law and judicial system rules in such a way the full message is carried over but in a tong-in-cheek way. This Sunday Times Best Seller has so many excellent reviews. With the hectic lifestyle of the criminal barrister, it makes me wonder how they find the time to write these awesome books.

This book explores how a person can become a barrister through the eyes of the author. We are treated to what type of person usually makes it from university to being called to the Bar (the term is used when a Barrister passes their pupillage as a trainee and is accepted as a registered Barrister). How the Secret Barrister's ideas surrounding criminals and what should be done with them drastically changed over the years when they were exposed to the truth about why people commit crimes. How a lack of sleep, money, and discrimination can make so many good pupils and barristers leave the profession. And the struggle behind getting a place as a pupil in a Chambers or Inn can be let alone being granted residence once passing your pupilage exams.

The author describes the many days spent in Magistrates Courts dealing with low level crime or having to pick up the cases that no other Barrister wants. The hopes that one day you will be able to put on the black gown and white horse hair wig that you paid thousands for in the Crown Court and then only to be destroyed by the Judge or a fellow advocate. Each of the 5 chapters takes us through their (I think its a he) school and family life, work experience/volunteering, university, choosing your speciality (criminal, civil, family etc), pupilage (first and second six - you will find out what that means in the book), residency, becoming a silk (maybe) and the ultimate goal to becoming a Judge.

Its thanks to individuals like The Secret Barrister, Alexandra Wilson, Alex McBride and many more that we are beginning to see into the secret world of the British legal system and understanding how, why, when and what things mean and happen in certain ways. I highly recommend this and his two other books. They are brilliantly written, engaging throughout, darkly funny as well as being educational at the same time. Why not give this book a go.
