and What If It Did?
One of the driving forces of human behavior is to always do what matters. There are even scales of importance ranging from ‘what matters most’ to ‘what matters least’, as if “matters” had some being and life all its own.
So what the heck determines what matters anyway? What is it about some goal or objective or mode of behavior that gives it a value on a “matters” scale. Is there intrinsic value “out there” that objectively and justly applies to actions, deeds, and results in our lives? Does something matter if no-one gives it a value?
Simply put, what matters is just a judgement call relative to you and you alone. There may be ego involved that wants you to show up to the world in some fashion, but the bottom line is it’s your judgment that determines if anything has a value, if it matters and how much. Just as the freedom to act is part of your will, so is the power of judgement.
What matters is never Universal, it is relative to the individual who determines the value of it. And those determinations begin and end in your own personal judgement. Opinion, which is the expression of judgement, can influence the judgment of others but cannot determine for them how much something matters. The more people who share a similar judgement, the more it collectively seems to matter.
The everyday experience of Life, which seems to be responding to a universal reality “out there”, makes it seem as if actions, results, events, and circumstance all matter to some extent. It seems as if their completion or materialization will have a predictable effect on you, either desirable or undesirable. And at a purely material, world of form experience level, it does seem as if some things matter universally. If you are confronted by a bear in a room, it's going to matter to you that your legs work, that your eyesight is strong enough to spot the door, and even if the door is unlocked and operable!
Even here the operative phrase is “matters to you”. It’s quite likely that there is someone who harbors a completely different judgement from yours, and their judgment is that it is unimportant for you to escape the angry bear. And for any number of reasons. Perhaps they consider you an enemy, or they simply value a bear’s life ahead of a human’s. Strictly a judgement call on everyone’s part.
Divinely speaking however, there is no judgement. Everything just is, neutral and impersonal. The outcome of any activity, no matter the magnitude of the consequences, is devoid of value without personal judgement. Therefore, without intrinsic value, nothing matters universally. In the realm of the Divine everything happens just as it should, or “for a reason” some like to say. To argue against the way things are, or to posit that some outcomes are intrinsically wrong or imperfect, is to insinuate that the infinite Divine Essence of everything is imperfect. And that’s an argument that few are prepared to take on.
But far from creating a sense of hopelessness or despair, the fact that nothing matters is very hopeful and empowering! It's literally impossible to fail or to make mistakes. Failure and mistakes are simply judgement calls, personal opinions that have no universal meaning. You are free to act in any way you choose. The choices you make may not garner you respect or universal acceptance at times, but the only score that counts is the one you create yourself. Nothing matters unless you think it does.
Perhaps you have heard the saying “You wouldn't be so concerned what others thought about you if you only knew how little they actually did!” There’s a lot of universal truth in that adage!
So, what epic "failures" have become something remarkable in your life? Do you think it's possible the context around failure can always be changed?
