Suman woke on 1st January, feeling like she didn’t want to get out of bed. Her heart was still weary from the ravages of the past year. In too many ways it had been a challenging one. And even with the new dawn of the new year she just couldn’t see how there could be anything good just because a day and year had turned a new leaf.
But she finally got out of bed, made herself a hot chai and stepped out into her garden. Her garden usually gave her a lot of joy. Her lovingly tended plants, the pretty flowers, the birds and butterflies that came to visit. But the past few months, she hadn’t found the usual joy and peace in this carefully nurtured space.
As she walked around with a listless air, her eyes fell on one pot which she had plated some seeds in and forgotten. This morning, even in the nip of the winter air, there was a little seedling peeping out of the mud. She was surprised to see it. She had given up on this pot and had been planning to plant something else in it. But now, quite unexpectedly, here was this little seedling. And it seemed to be saying something to her. The seedling peeped up with a cheeky twitch of its new leaf as if to say – “Hey, here I am! What a beautiful day and what a wondrous world. Can’t wait to explore and grow and see what life has in store for me.”
Suman bent down to touch the little seedling and inexplicably her heaviness seemed to lift a bit. She saw why green is called the colour of hope. In the fresh sapling green she saw that it was indeed a new year and it could be one which would be different from the last. There was no real surety, but just in knowing that every new day and year brought new possibilities, brought hope. And hope has a power of its own.

She felt spurred with a new energy. She went inside and woke her husband who was surprised to see her expression. He had grown used to her moping face the last few months. This new Suman was a welcome change.
Suman didn’t say anything. She just took him by the hand and walked him out into the garden to show off her new seedling. No words seemed necessary. They both looked at the seedling and the garden and the birds chirping in the trees. It was a day quite like yesterday, but somehow it as different. It was a new day, a new year and a new hope.
Wishing you all renewal and joy for this year. See it with fresh eyes to find hope and magic. Welcome 2023!
