Time; She waits for no one
?Time waits for no one. This thought came to me this morning as I saw it was the last day of the first month of the year…already! How quickly this month has flown by and in the same way it will soon be the end of another year! Here is an old fashioned simple story for this old, simple but profound thought.
In the valley of Srinagar lived a shawl weaver with his two sons. He made lovely patterns on shawls and he taught his sons the art of shawl making very well. One day he called his sons and said to them, “My dear children, I want to give you both equal shares in my savings and with this money you can start your own weaving business and earn a living once I am gone”. One sad winter evening, the weaver passed away.
It was a sad loss for the sons, but life carries on and after mourning period the elder son said to his brother, “Now we should concentrate on our work, summer is coming and lots of tourists will arrive. It will a good chance to earn some money by selling our shawls to them.”
The younger brother said, “There are months for the tourist season to come, I will do it later.” The elder brother started the work of weaving. He went to the market, sourced the finest wool at a good cost and started to make shawls. He tried reminding his brother to start too, but the younger brother said, “I told you I will do it later. Leave me alone”. Days flew away like the wind and winter gave way to spring. The summer was now close.

The younger brother realised he had little time left to make shawls. He rushed to the market to buy wool. But by then only the low quality wool was left and that too at a high rate. He had no choice. He bought it and started making shawls. But since he was in a hurry to make many shawls he couldn’t take the time to ensure quality. The end result was that his shawls were of poor quality and not very attractive.
The tourists season came and everyone was keen to buy the older brother’s beautiful shawls and nobody was interested in the younger brother’s goods. He realised his fault but there was nothing to be done now. He had not listened to his brother, and wasted his share of the money and precious time. The next winter was going to be a hard one..
When people spend too much money, we call them spendthrifts. And those who waste time are procrastinators. Time is as valuable a resource as money. And sometimes it’s value is much more than money.
Just a gentle reminder to all of us- It’s already one month in the year. What is it that you planned to start at the beginning of the year and are still to initiate. A project, a health plan, a hobby, more connections with loved ones….whatever it is, it is important….Maybe this simple story will help you get off the starting block.?
