??? Notes on People Not Liking You

??? Notes on People Not Liking You

Earlier this week, I made a post sharing 5 rules that I’ve used to guide my life . These are 5 things that I’ve done to actively change my life for the better and to get the most out of my experiences.

So many people enthusiastically embraced these rules, but the majority admitted how difficult one of those rules was for them to practice in their own life:

“Rule #3: Get comfortable with people not liking me.”

Now I’ll admit, this was something that’s been difficult for me to embrace in my life as well but there are 3 major things that will help you develop this skill:

  1. Know that most of the time, when people don’t like you, it’s not about you. Instead, it’s their negative projection based on a characteristic you have (could be ethnicity, accent, nationality, etc)
  2. Ask yourself if the person who dislikes you is currently adding to your life. 99% of the time, they’re not. The random comment on social media, the stranger on the train, etc. These people are meaningless in your life, and therefore, their opinions should be treated the same.
  3. Spend an enormous amount of time around people you love. Think of this like a “hater defense battery.” The more time you spend with loved ones, the greater your charge, and the easier it is not to care about people disliking you. Love reinforces you that it is only the opinion of those you truly care about that matters.

Remember: YOU DO NOT NEED ANYONE OR ANYTHING TO APPROVE YOUR SELF-WORTH.

The truth is, some people will never know you, and utterly hate you for who they think you are. When a person walks away, wrongs us, or even makes hurtful comments, we must learn to shake off that disrespect.

Don’t believe the lies that we’re not attractive enough, talented enough, or good enough. THEY don’t determine our value. THEY can’t lessen our self-worth. The only power people have over us is the power we give to them.

We don’t have to play up to people to win their favor. If they don’t want to be in our lives, it’s actually their loss. Not ours. And when you do not seek or need their approval, they have no power over you.

Other notes from this week…

?? Domaine Des Jeanne This is Jill and my absolute favorite rosé on the PLANET and we were honored to be able to visit their vineyard with the boys next week. I’ve got a very special announcement about our trip coming next week, so be sure to subscribe to my newsletter and watch my socials and you’ll be the first to know what that could be. ???

?? OralB iO 10 This was a Christmas gift I received last year and it’s hands down the best toothbrush I’ve ever used. And if you know me, you know I’m serious about my oral hygiene! This thing is no joke!

?? The Last of Us I have only two episodes left and I can’t stress enough what a great series this is. So thoughtful and well-acted. Pedro Pascal is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

See you next week!

xx Paul

This is especially true if you are used to being liked. Accepting that it won't always be so can be more than a little jarring.

To get though the people not liking me bit, I’ve had to ask myself “Judy, do you like everyone” and that’s a sobering thought.
