A note to my future self!

I find the old laptop that I brought to Australia 15 years ago. Before taking it to the recycling depot, I connect it to power and turn it on to curiously see if it still works. After a long time of booting, a fairly clean desktop appears. With a smile on my face, I check the folders. I open one which is named "Morteza's note". It contains an old Microsoft Word file with large font Persian words. It reads:
"13/08/2006 What are you doing here? Why did you come here? What was missing? ....."
It continues me going on and on about how miserable I felt after two months of migrating to Australia.
I stay quiet and look at the notes. I realise there's a sentence at the end of the file in English and an even larger font. "See where you were then. Go on and prove yourself wrong. 10/06/2012."
"Wow!" I say to myself, knowing that a Morteza who already went through a stroke, a divorce, and so many other troubles, wrote the second note, while the first one was from a younger Morteza whose pride had been damaged.
Unable to connect to the internet, I save the file on a USB drive and upload it to my Dropbox.
It's an amazing journey. The broken Morteza in 2006 turns into a determined one in 2012, and a wiser Morteza recalls the journey in 2021, concluding why it was a success.
The magic of Self-reflection
We always talk about reviewing the current status of an organisation and improving it. Are we doing the same for ourselves? Have you stood in front of a mirror and asked yourself who you are? Have you truly identified your potentials? Have you reflected on your past good and not so good experiences? How frequently do you sit in peace and reflect on your life and journey?
I admire one specific good habit that I had at my younger age. Writing about how I felt and whom I thought I was. Whenever I see one of those notes, I eagerly read it, and it fascinates me. The conclusion is easy. I have been becoming better and stronger even though my journey was tougher, and I'm carrying many scars.
Now, you might realise why Morteza writes on LinkedIn. It's not only sharing my experiences and lessons with other professionals but reminding myself of my own experiences and the fact that the first person who should not forget them is no one but myself.
Our decisions define us!
Life is an amazing journey. Some of us look around and follow the norms, while some decide not to be defined by others. Some abide by, while some break the traditions. Some make others happy, while some believe that the first happy person should be themselves. Some lose confidence, while some grow it over time. Some avoid responsibilities, while some take more and more. So, why some are happy, and some are not?
There is no gun in your head in normal circumstances, and you are not forced to take orders and follow others.
You are a human being with choices. Look back at your life as if you're driving and looking at the rear mirror. Think about every single choice that you had and the decisions you made. What do you think about them? What lessons have you learned? Start writing it down and review it frequently. It will come in handy much sooner than expected.
Many people might have told you that your destiny is written. Have you read it? Then, start writing it yourself by making decisions that make you whom you dreamed of being.

1 年Some tears wanted to come out of my eyes as I read "What are you doing here? Why did you come here? What was missing?...." For those of us who have traveled so far away to learn and develop professionally in a new country, these questions tend to be constant. We left everything behind in an extreme way... We embark on finding these answers that will be revealed over the years to those of us starting from nothing. All we can do is try our best each day to honor the drive that propelled us, which is, deep down, the human pursuit of happiness and doing the best we can with great courage. I'm opening a Word document with words on the magic of self-reflection on my old computer that will hopefully serve me a bit longer... ??
