It's FRIDAY! I'm a FEMINIST! And that can only mean one thing... we're back with another ? FEMINISM FRIDAY ? !
This week I wanna talk about the NOT ALL MEN thing. And if you want a TL;DR... I think it's fucking cringe. Anyway, let's get into it...
According to Wikipedia, the NotAllMen hashtag has been around since the mid-2000s. You must have seen it... legit every time someone on the internet calls out the crappy behaviour of a guy, there's some incel keyboard warrior sat there poised and ready to hashtag the shit out of the post. And it needs to stop.
The absurdity of it as a response to someone's traumatic or uncomfortable experience with a man is frankly laughable. As this excellent tweet shows, the logic for it just... isn't there.
And if you're sat there thinking... but Amy, it ISN'T all men... dude, we know. We know it's not ALL men. But it's definitely fucking some of you. And shouting 'not all men' every time we bring up sexual harassment, creepy behaviour, or violence, just means you're not actually listening to the issue. In fact, you're doing the exact opposite. You're making it about you.
If you're a NotAllMen-er, I challenge you to use the damn hashtag when we're talking about stuff men ARE good at. "Men are better drivers than women" ... but not ALL men. "Men are stronger than women"... but not ALL men. "Men are the breadwinners in households"... but not ALL men.
See, when it comes to the not all men brigade, it seems that we're actually working with some very fragile egos. But that's a whole other post.
Peace out. ??

1 年There's an irony that the notallmen hashtag does a better job of getting men involved in feminist issues than ones like metoo. Getting men defensive, or defensive about being defensive is a gnarly power move.

1 年Freely admit I didn’t get it a few years ago - much more aware now of what women experience (I mean it’s likely still a tiny percentage of the reality but the point still stands that I’m less unaware than I was). I think it may have been Regina B. who said or shared something that really hit home for me (before events like Sarah Everard’ murder really changed conversations and my understanding of your experiences) - “Yes it’s not ALL men, but we don’t know which of you it is!” Which echoes that tweet too. Wouldn’t call myself an ally because I don’t think that can be a self-proclaimed thing - but hopefully better than before (from hopefully not an awful starting position) and always learning and seeking to improve.

1 年I'm no longer on twitter, thankfully. I see so much content online and often think it would be another good topic for Feminism Friday. I recently saw an interview with Emma Watson who was upskirted on her 18th birthday (before the law was changed). She was explaining that if they had done it the day before it would have been illegal and how Daniel Radcliffe and other co-stars didn't experience the same when they turned 18. Just something else that Men have never experienced, celebrity or otherwise.
