“Showing Appreciation”

Astonishing glee to display admiration for artists has been shown through many identifiers from loud handclapping to quiet snapping fingers and noiseless wavy jazz hands.

A night out on the town in time stilled hot spots has been euphoric for decades to sip (or gulp) zesty ice creamed grasshopper or pink squirrel cocktails, various hard liquor drinks, sweet whipped cream topped coffees, supreme bubbly wines, crafted cold beers, exotic beverage concoctions and to taste exquisite delectable tapas with friends, neighbors and family with cheerful excitement.

Taking a sentimental trip back to classic social destinations from the 1930s to present, major establishments have commemorated loyal patrons in mood lite settings since civilization. To relax and celebrate everyday life, people love to feed the soul, spirit and joy in different yet common denominator selections of meaning and choice.

As a blissful permanent mark on societies, an array of bashes sparked with supper clubs of simple culinary menus in elegant surroundings for Lawrence Welk type waltzing rhythms of Glenn Miller orchestra gliding songs, live jazz or piano music distinctly playing in smoke-filled bars with plush booths, alluring private quaffing speakeasies sought with the enticement to enter behind fake doors of storefronts or restaurants and poetry cliques or cafes showcasing creative written poetry in low-lite lounges of small round quaint tables as soft folky flute sounds whistled in the background.

The most popular gesture of signifying appreciation for creators with exhilaration over the years, especially poets or the writing of the poems, has been snapping fingers as a hushed response instead of clapping. Snapping fingers as an applause originated at a venue under a large apartment building for folk singers and poets to gather and entertain. The sounds of the performances would often carry to the apartments above and when poetry readings were past midnight, the audience could not clap to express their approval. Thus, snapping fingers were used to stop noise complaints.

I was in this Max Glick Canadian television Gemini award-winning comedy-drama series, which aired on CBC Television from 1990 to 1992. I am the waitress in the black dress in the snapping fingers poetry reading scene set in 1963, timestamp starting at 13:23. Based on the Morley Torgov novel, The Outside Chance of Maximilian Glick and its 1988 film adaptation, the television series centered on Maximilian Glick, a young Jewish boy coming-of-age in Beausejour, Manitoba, Canada in the 1960s.

To this day, I personally snap my fingers (with a silent gleam of nostalgia) to acclaim brilliant talent. The charming film still holds endearing, authentic reviews with public praise.
