Streaming and web browsing results in Portugal / Mobile connections

NOS?provided the best performance rates?in mobile video streaming (YouTube) and in?mobile Internet browsing in Portugal, between July 1st, 2022, and June 30th, 2023.?

• The Portuguese, with NOS, achieve better streaming results (88.48%?of a maximum of 100%)?than in countries like Germany (86.61%),?France (85.47%) and?the United Kingdom (84.58%).?The?percentage takes into account the loading time of a video on YouTube.
• On the other hand, the Portuguese have obtained worse results in web browsing:?64.22%,?13 percentage points less than the operator Telekom in Germany, being the last of the four countries in this indicator.?The result of NOS translates into a web loading time between 3 and 4 seconds. ?
• The quality of streaming in Portugal has been excellent, while the quality of browsing?remains correct.

• Each Internet operator that appears by country has been the one that has obtained the highest percentage, the best, for each indicator.

In Portugal?7,787 streaming tests and 8,304 web browsing tests carried out in the nPerf app available on?iOS and Android,?between July 1st, 2022, and June 30th, 2023.?These tests reflect the actual experience of the general public?in Portugal?on the various Internet networks.?

The goal of the streaming test is to measure the quality of video viewing on the most popular streaming platform around the world: YouTube. It operates under conditions similar to the direct use of YouTube and therefore takes into account the quality of the network between the user and the YouTube servers.

How is it calculated?

It is calculated considering all the time required to load the video (before or during playback). If the ratio between the duration of the video and the overall reading time (reading + loading) tends to 1 then the performance index will tend towards 100%. And conversely, the more the ratio moves away from 1, the more the index will tend towards 0%.?

The nPerf test calculates the performance of streaming quality on YouTube, doing three?tests in different resolutions (pixels):?360p (SD),?720p (HD) and 1080p (Full HD).?The final rate is an average of the three results in the three resolutions.

The browsing test allows the user to accurately measure the loading time of the 5 most visited websites?by local Internet users (YouTube is excluded from this test as it is subject of the streaming test).?Among the five websites that have been taken into account in Portugal are Google, Facebook and Wikipedia.

• This indicator reflects the quality of navigation perceived by the user. It can however be negatively impacted by the performance of the terminal used, especially if it is old.

How is it calculated?

It is calculated considering the loading time of the page. A page loaded in 10 seconds or more gets a 0% performance rate and a page loaded instantly gets a performance rate of 100%. For example, a page loaded in 2 seconds will get a performance rate of 80%.

That is to say, 64% of NOS translates into a website loading time between 3 and 4 seconds.
