Norwegian energy populism: fighting wind turbines and interconnectors

In 2019, Norway imported more electricity than it exported. Nonetheless, Norwegian populists of all shades continue their falsely patriotic campaign against wind power and electricity interconnectors with other European countries, fearing that too much electricity will be exported. In practice, they want to create obstacles to the generation and export of renewable electricity in order to to keep electricity prices cheap at home, that is to say, to indirectly subsidize it.

Read my analysis of Norwegian energy populism and the failure to position itself for the EU's energy transition, and how this squanders Norway's unique position in the European energy system and undermines both Norway's own economic interests and the international decarbonization effort.
