A Look at Norwalk's History
Norwalk’s modern-day history began when settlers from Massachusetts bought the land that later became the city in the mid-1600s. The town was officially incorporated in 1651 and was known for its agriculture at the time. It grew steadily until the Revolutionary War, at which time British forces nearly destroyed the entire town, but fortunately, those remaining were able to rebuild. By 1880, oyster farming had become an important industry in Norwalk, and it had the largest fleet of steam-powered oyster boats in the entire world. In 1893, the town officially re-incorporated as a city, and it has been growing ever since.

PFLAG Norwalk is the Norwalk area’s local chapter of the national PFLAG organization, which is the largest grassroots organization of its kind in the country. PFLAG is well-known for its mission of supporting LGBTQ people, friends, family, and allies across the country in a wide variety of ways. With 500 chapters and more than 200,000 members in the United States, PFLAG plays a critical role in providing advocacy, support, and resources to the LGBTQ community.
The mission of the Triangle Community Center is to provide a safe and friendly space to gather, create connections, and find helpful resources for the LGBTQ community in Norwalk. The Center provides events, resources, advocacy, and opportunities for connection to the LGBTQ community living in the greater Norwalk area.

Summers are warm but pleasant, with highs in July usually reaching around 84°F, while winters can be cold and often snowy with average lows dropping down to around 21°F in January. Norwalk receives around 50 inches of rain per year in about 29 inches of snow. Spring and fall are typically mild and wonderful times to enjoy all of the natural beauty that Norwalk has to offer.

The Norwalk Oyster Festival is by far one of the most popular festivals in Norwalk each year – and for a coastal city known for its excellent seafood, this is no surprise. This annual festival takes place on the first weekend after Labor Day in Veterans Park and celebrates the history of the oyster industry in Norwalk. Its average annual attendance is in the thousands, and the festival is known for its great food, vendors, carnival rides, and excellent entertainment.
The Best Neighborhoods in Norwalk
Unlike some larger cities that tend to have one specific “gayborhood,” the LGBTQ community in Norwalk is spread throughout the city, although South Norwalk, is one particularly popular neighborhood. Known by the locals as SoNo, it is a diverse neighborhood that offers an excellent blend of suburban lifestyle and city amenities. It is a funky, friendly area with an artsy vibe. The SoNo Arts Celebration is one of the most popular annual festivals in Norwalk and one you won't want to miss. There are several excellent local beaches to choose from, including Calf Pasture Beach, which is often a crowded, busy beach, or Rowayton Beach, for those who prefer a quieter, more laid-back vibe. Veteran's Memorial Park and Marina is a beautiful green space situated on 35 acres in Norwalk. This popular park includes a marina and boat launch, a playground, several baseball diamonds, basketball courts, and soccer, hockey, and football fields, as well as trails for jogging, hiking, and bike riding. The park also has a lovely boardwalk overlooking beautiful Norwalk harbor.

Troup 429 is one of the most popular LGBTQ bars in Norwalk, and it is definitely one spot that you’ll want to put on your list for a fun night out. Whether you enjoy great drinks, good music, fun theme nights, friendly crowds, or all of the above, you’ll find it here. It’s truly a great spot to enjoy a night out with friends.
When in Norwalk, Post Road Diner is a classic, must-stop spot. Though not specifically an LGBTQ spot, it’s friendly and welcoming to all. Known by the locals as PRD, the diner has a classic 1950s feel. Guests can drink a milkshake at the diner counter and enjoy delicious food of all kinds. It’s open 24 hours, so any time is a good time to stop by!
