Northside BMT exceeds survival expectations, 16 years running

Northside Hospital’s Blood and Marrow Transplant Program has again ranked among the best in the United States for bone marrow transplant survival outcomes.?

For the 16th consecutive year (2009-24), Northside’s program exceeded predicted one-year survival outcomes for U.S. transplant centers, according to the?2024 Transplant Center Survival Report?by the?Centers for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research.?

  • Northside is the only U.S. transplant program to achieve this historic milestone.?

The big picture:?Every three or four minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukemia, according to NMDP (formerly Be The Match?). For many patients, their only hope for a cure is a blood or marrow transplant.?

By the numbers:?Each year, CIBMTR analyzes survival data for U.S. transplant centers performing allogeneic transplants, providing an overall risk-adjusted analysis indicating whether one-year survival is as expected, above expected or below expected for each specific transplant center compared to an average transplant center.?

  • CIBMTR’s 2024 report tabulated patient survival following transplantation at 172 adult and pediatric transplant centers for the reporting cycle of Jan. 1, 2020-Dec. 31, 2022.?
  • Patients at Northside had an?82.6% one-year survival rate, placing the program in the 95th percentile for risk-adjusted survival outcomes.
  • Northside operates the?largest allogeneic BMT center in Georgia?and one of the largest in the Southeast.
  • It’s also the?only center in Georgia?to achieve outcomes statistically superior to predicted rates and one of just 12 U.S. centers (less than 10% of all centers) to earn this designation in the latest reporting cycle.

What they’re saying:?

  • Dr. Kent Holland, Northside’s BMT program director: “Northside BMT’s survival results are unprecedented in the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplant and are the result of exceptional patient-focused quality of care.”

  • Dr. Asad Bashey, director of clinical research for Northside’s BMT Program: “Northside’s BMT Program has shown, once again, that its achievement of the very best survival results possible following allogeneic transplantation is not a fluke but a result of extraordinary investment over nearly two decades to processes and practices that produce such results.”
  • Jack Miller, a leukemia survivor treated at Northside: “My family put their faith in Northside’s BMT program because of its incredible reputation; if you need high-quality care in Georgia, it’s available here.”

So proud to have called Northside my work home for 26 years and apart of the humble beginnings of the BMT Program. I worked on the original 6 bed inpatient BMT/Leukemia unit when Dr Steis would perform the cell infusion and the nurses role was to prepare the water bath. I knew phenomenal work would be accomplished in that unit. ???? Kudos. The recognition is well deserved.

Over 37 years ago, I sat with a group of highly motivated, intelligent men and women within the medical profession at Northside Hospital planning how we would approach the role of tall of our transplant. The unit opened in 1990 and was six beds today as well over 70 beds with the results of speaking for themselves in the above listed paragraph. There was a time in this country when this type of aggressive sophisticated treatment was only available available in university hospital settings. Fortunately, the national cancer institute with the support of not only healthcare professionals and oncology and hematology, but the actions of those people practicing in those areas be at community hospitals decided that more patients would be treated in community hospitals if that was their choice. And from that and the tireless work of many of those people, the problem that you see at the north side BMT is alive well and thriving today. Congratulations to all of the men and women that continue to work there in the crossword for patience and their families congratulations to Patti Owen,, the director of the Institute for cancer control, and oncology services and all of the great staff who work with her.

Congratulations on this amazing accomplishment & kudos to the talented team at NHCI.
