Development Services Unveils the Natural Resources Division

“Most developers don’t know when mating seasons for local wildlife are, and that construction shouldn’t take place during that critical time,” said Alaina Ray, Development Services Director.? “We have empty lots with the tortoises on them. We try to ensure they don’t get buried during development, but we have 104 square miles of land and with all the building it’s hard to keep up with."

Recognizing these challenges, North Port is forming a Natural Resources Division with a mission to monitor and safeguard North Port’s precious habitats near canals and creeks, as well as overseeing tree and wildlife protection efforts and a City-wide tree planting plan.

The City's tree fund, supported by fees from developers, will provide the necessary funding for this new and important division.? This initiative is anticipated to make a significant impact by the close of the year without causing delays in the permitting process.
