North Pole Energy Permitting Reform
Welcome to?day 1 of R Street's holiday series, The 12 Days of Policy. This campaign will take a closer look at different R Street policy areas. We hope everyone has a fun, safe holiday season!
From 2023 to 2024, the North Pole saw an 800 percent increase in demand for Christmas cheer. This has led to more lights, decorations, toy building, cookies, and sleighs. The increase in business has led to drastically higher energy consumption, while generation has remained the same.
In order to meet this energy demand, North Pole lawmakers are analyzing how they can reform energy permitting to allow for new electricity generating resources and infrastructure. Previously restrictive permitting, a saturated transmission grid, and interconnection backlogs have prevented new power plants from coming online to serve growing customer demand at the North Pole.
