North Carolina’s Still Underwater. Underwear Can Raise Us Up.

Thank you SOOOOO much for checking in on me & Hubby Dan during Hurricane Florence. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and your heartfelt question asking how you can help.

Because Charlotte’s inland, the heavy wind and rains caused us to lose power for just a couple of days. We got lucky.

However, our friends on the North Carolina coast have been bludgeoned by Mother Nature. Lives, homes, & peace of mind have been shattered. People are slowly starting to return to the dank, muddy, pig-poop-infested remains of their homes.

Yup, the pig-poop struggle is real. Because hog farming’s a big industry in North Carolina. Where'd ya think all your bacon comes from?

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP

Here are 2 terrific non-profit organizations you can donate to. They’re both doing great work to help North Carolinians impacted by Hurricane Florence.

LET’S TALK UNDERWEAR

First is Undies for Everyone @ https://www.undiesforeveryone.org.

Think about the worst day of your life. Then RE-IMAGINE that day with you having worn the same pair of foul smelling underwear for 3 days. EEeeeww!!!

Everyone deserves the basic dignity of clean underwear. And this fantastic organization ensures this fundamental need is met for those in less-than-ideal circumstances.

I first heard of this non-profit from the incomparable Bren’e Brown when Hurricane Harvey hit Texas. She vouched for them, and this incredible email I recently received from them shows why.

Dear Michelle C,

At this time last year South Texans were in the throes of sorting through muddy family photos, discarding soaking wet furniture in our front yards and living in shelters, on friends' couches or in hotels in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Kind people like you from around the world rushed to our collective side, helping us to get back on our feet.

484 Carolinians donated to Undies for Everyone to assist those of us in need, who had lost everything, including our clothes. They helped bring dignity and some comfort in a dark time.

Today we are asking for your help in giving Carolinians the same sense of dignity, of normality, after Hurricane Florence just as they and all of you did for Texans.

Undies for Everyone is sending underwear to the Carolinas and we need your help. While 1.5 million pair of underwear were donated and delivered to us in Houston during Harvey, logistics dictate that donations be in dollars in order to get the underwear to those in need more quickly and at the best price to serve the most people.

LET’S TALK NC COMMUNITY FOUNDATION DISASTER RELIEF FUND

If digging deep into your underpants isn’t your jam, then consider donating to the North Carolina Community Foundation Disaster Relief Fund.

This non-profit was created to ensure all North Carolina citizens have access to philanthropic resources – especially those in rural areas. And our rural citizens are the most vulnerable to pig-poop and coal ash.

LET’S TALK DISASTER UNEMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE

Did you know that workers, self-employed individuals, & small business owners who are -- or may become -- unemployed due to Hurricane Florence may be eligible for DUA (Disaster Unemployment Assistance)?

DUA's a federal program that provides temporary payments to people in a federally declared disaster area whose employment or income has been lost or interrupted as a direct result of the disaster.
