Pork consumption has skyrocketed as a result of population growth, urbanization, and rising incomes. Furthermore, as a result of certain countries' rapid development, food consumption preferences have shifted to foodstuffs of animal origin.
?Therefore, to meet this need in a sustainable manner, the agricultural production system is undergoing a paradigm transition. This will require unprecedented global collaboration across industries and at all levels of society. Farm managers, veterinarians, and farmers are not far behind in identifying and implementing essential and promising methods to meet demand. One option is to implement Artificial Insemination (AI) in pig farming. Various studies revealed that this breeding approach has been tested in pig farming for decades and appears to offer several benefits in terms of higher farm output.
?AI is a proven breeding technology that has been widely used in pig reproduction. It is a technique in which boar (male pig) semen is prepared in the laboratory and artificially deposited into the female reproductive system with a catheter at the appropriate moment. Artificial insemination is a widely used reproductive technique in livestock improvement breeding programs. This method is commonly utilized in cattle. Despite its huge claimed benefits, AI has not been commercially harnessed in pigs. But, it is a simple and low-cost technology that has great promise for pig farmers.
?Amazingly, one of the African countries has begun to make artificial insemination services more accessible to pig farmers, allowing farmers easier access to superior breeds and boosting the pig sector.

According to Rwandan media (the New Times) report, Rwanda has begun a new initiative to use drones to transport pig semen to veterinarians for artificial insemination (AI), which is a huge move that will lead to high adoption of AI in pig farming.
?Although AI in pigs has received a lot of attention, adoption in commercial farms remains minimal. However, I strongly recommend all pig farmers to implement this important breeding approach in their operations in order to maximize the return on their pig investments and consequently lead to the sustainable pig production. It is now time for pig farmers to use this practice as a normal part of their farm's production activities.
