Insights
Water scarcity presents a growing challenge across continents. Globally, agriculture stands as the primary water consumer, utilizing 72% of freshwater resources.
SoilSense, a Danish firm, has pioneered a smart sensor system for digitally monitoring irrigation across diverse crops and soil types. This innovation aligns with UN Goals: Zero Hunger (2), Clean Water (6), and Responsible Consumption and Production (12). Feedback from SoilSense's Danish clientele indicates a 20-25% yield increase in potatoes due to optimized irrigation. Scientific research highlights that targeted watering, guided by sensor data, has the potential to curtail water consumption by 45-50% for fruits and vegetables (Food Nation).
Algiecel, a Danish company, has introduced a new plug-and-play photobioreactor technology. This innovation continuously captures CO2 emissions and utilizes LED light via photosynthesis to convert it into microalgae biomass.
This technology empowers facilities such as biogas and fermentation plants to utilize their on-site CO2 from industrial processes, transforming it into microalgae oil and biomass. These resultant products can be incorporated as a valuable ingredient in aquaculture feed, pet food, human dietary supplements, and skincare products in the cosmetics industry (Food Nation).

The constructed environment constitutes approximately 10% of the global GDP, playing a significant role in emissions, resource consumption, and land transformation across various sectors. It's a substantial contributor, accounting for over a third of the planet's final energy usage, nearly 40% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, and utilizing close to half of the world's raw materials.
As urban populations expand rapidly in emerging economies and demographic shifts occur in developed ones, there's a growing necessity to develop urban infrastructure extensively. To accommodate future spatial demands while curbing global warming, there's an urgent need to hasten the transition toward a built environment that is both net-zero emissions and circular, promoting health, inclusivity, and resilience (World Business Council for Sustainable Development).
