CVP invests $2.8m in digital platform aiming to make shipping safer

Digital shipping safety platform SAYFR has clinched new finance from a Nordic venture fund. The Lasse Kristoffersen-chaired operation said Corinthian Venture Partners (CVP) is pumping in NOK 25m ($2.8m) to boost the company’s data-driven approach to safety. The cash will be used to “scale up” the service, SAYFR said.

The company aims to improve organisational safety culture, saving lives and reducing accidents and environmental pollution. SAFYR is run by chief executive Johan Rostoft and overseen by Torvald Klaveness CEO Kristoffersen. Rostoft said SAYFR has been very busy throughout the pandemic and has recruited to strengthen its team.

“To keep up with increasing demand, we need to grow faster and raise external funding,” he explained.

Kristoffersen said SAYFR “combines deep insight into why incidents happen and what needs to be done to avoid them, through a digital platform that’s simple to use and scalable.” He added: “This is evidently appealing to many clients in different market segments.”

Torkel Soma, the company’s chief scientist, believes “big data” is the way to be more proactive on this issue.

Downtime downed

“Documented results show that in the companies we work with, the number of serious accidents has fallen by up to 80% and technical downtime by 35%,” he added.

CVP, set up in 2020, will have two representatives on the board. SAYFR’s founders and management will remain majority shareholders. “Corinthian Venture Partners has made this investment because SAYFR has a strong and dedicated team and a powerful digital solution for improving safety culture,” said CVP partner Erling Nilsen.

SAYFR uses industrial data from the past 20 years — equating to 10m data points from more than 250,000 employees in 60 countries. The company was established in 2018, and currently has 11 employees.

Founders include executives from class society DNV, Torvald Klaveness, Danish shipping giant AP Moller-Maersk and Marinetek.
