The Non-Negotiables of Leadership

The Non-Negotiables of Leadership

Empower others. Leave a legacy.

Leadership development is currently one of the top global challenges facing all industries across the globe. Understanding your behaviour and being consciously aware of your actions as a leader are the keys to unlocking the potential of your team.

1. Focus. It's easy to get distracted by the next shiny thing. Focus on high priority goals and resist the urge to jump from one project to the next without achieving the initial win of your current focus. Close the loop.

2. Lead purposefully. It's all about vision. Inspire and guide your team with a clear and compelling vision that aligns each piece of work with the greater purpose. This results in a more cohesive team, where each member supports the other and shares valuable knowledge and expertise, decreasing task duplication and multiplying the output.

3. Place importance on wellbeing. Without mental and physical wellbeing, consistency and productivity diminish and success is impossible. Prioritise health for sustained success.

4. Foster continuous learning and development. Emphasise the importance of personal and professional development. Ensure that there's a clear succession plan within your team and encourage a growth mindset. If not, your team will become stagnant, and innovation will fade.

5. Only accept excellence. Human behaviour dictates that when our limits are tested, we deliver. Uphold high standards, clearly communicate your expectations, and create a winning culture.

6. Collaborate. Diversity is powerful, and a diverse team always outperforms teams that lack variety in backgrounds, personalities, life experiences and beliefs. A strong team reflects its market.

7. Multiply. Grow other leaders. The most powerful leader makes themselves redundant. Empower and equip your team to lean on each other and achieve their goals by showing them how to tap into and use their natural genius.

8. Be consistent with value. Always be adding value. Ensure that your contributions positively impact others and your organisation. Avoid internal politics, refrain from complaining, and listen more than you speak.

9. Leverage technology. Utilise and experiment with new tools to enhance performance. Be open to new technologies and the changing world around you, while being mindful of the potential pitfalls.

10. Leave a legacy. Make it a habit to contribute meaningfully to the world and those around you. Ensure that your actions (and decisions) have a positive influence on others, and leave a lasting, beneficial effect on each and every person whom you have the privilege of meeting.
