While this isn’t an idea that I came up with originally. It has been one that I have been following for years. Having non-negotiables in my life has taught me to stay grounded and has helped me keep my why close to me at all times. I don’t know about you but I am constantly being pulled in many different directions. Between owning a business, being a mom, finding time to just be human, taking care of a house, all the things, it can be really stressful. This approach has stuck with me so much because it’s simple and I like simple.?
So what are the non-negotiables I am talking about? They are around these three areas: you, your family, and your business. The idea here is to find one thing in each of those areas that no matter what is happening in life, these things are things that you commit to doing if nothing else. Here is what I’ve learned over the years.?
1. Me. Someone told me a long time ago that even though I was a mother and a spouse that I should still come first. I laughed pretty hard at that thought. At that time I couldn't imagine putting myself ahead of my family. That was crazy, right? Well, they made a really great point after I was done laughing. They shared with me that if I was no longer around what would it matter? Who was I really serving and is it serving me now? Ouch! It made me realize why I was burning out. Why I was so stressed all the time and feeling like I wasn’t getting anywhere. Day in and day out I was giving to everyone around me. I did nothing for me. I used to tell myself I hadn’t done anything to deserve that just yet. That was totally wrong. The moment I changed my mindset and started choosing me, I got better. It saved me.?
2. Family. Probably like you, I entered the real estate industry to create a flexible schedule that allowed me to prioritize and be there for my family. This is my "why"—the reason I do what I do. For the first few years in my real estate career I worked a lot. I mean I still work a lot now but I have learned how to prioritize and say no. Back then even when I wasn’t working, I was still not around. I would be with my family physically yet still be consumed with this business in my head. After learning about this I asked myself, what am I doing? Is this the life I was trying to build? What was I trying to prove and to who? I knew I needed to make some changes. This gave me permission to do so. If my family was in fact my why then how could I protect that at all cost? That was a huge moment. Now I build my business around them.?
3. Business. I can’t speak for other industries but from a real estate perspective, trying to build this business is really hard. It takes a while to find your way and there are so many ways to build it. People are giving advice left and right. It is no wonder one doesn’t know what to do. Have you seen all the get rich quick ideas out there? It’s exhausting, expensive, and it doesn’t work!! As I mentioned before, I am simple and like things to stay simple. While it might be hard for someone to just pick one thing in this area, it is really important. There is something in your business right now that you can commit to. My question to you is, what are you going to do? What is the one thing that you need to do right now to keep the momentum going in your business? Yes, there is always a lot to do and a lot to know but don’t sleep on the basics. Those are usually the things people let go when that was what brought them to where they are now. Don't overcomplicate this one.
