non linear science – an introduction

The idea for this blog originated from the thought that the way science is taught in schools is linear. We study physics, chemistry and biology separately but in nature they are present simultaneously & by studying them in continuum we get a much more holistic view.
This blog won’t help anyone crack engineering entrance exams and often it will tend to over-simplify things through analogies – but that is the way science evolves. I remember Richard Feynman making the point that when we are introducing the topic of solar system to fifth grader it is ok to start with the assumption that the earth is a uniform sphere and the planets revolve on circular orbits around the sun. The ‘sphere’ will be replaced by ‘oblate spheroid’ and the ‘circular’ orbit gets replaced by ‘elliptical’ orbits as the child gets to higher classes. The purpose of this blog is to get the reader excited about science. If this makes you want to know more, or once in a while it gives you a wow moment, it would have achieved its objective.
But why non-linear? Non-linear because we don’t follow a sequence of chapters, we learn the way a child learns – by observing and co-relating. If we can make this initiative stick for a while, over time hopefully you will see the patterns emerge.
Do give us feedback on areas that you would like this blog to cover. If there are builds that you can offer – most welcome. We would be happy to go back and unlearn a few things if necessary to learn something new.
So, happy reading…hope the link below works!

1 年Great point, Pratyaya Chakrabarti totally agreed. No learning is linear, science or otherwise. Its always an iterative process. It helps when learning starts from a problem rather than chapter in books. Books can be great when you are stuck with a context. Worked for me as I was never an academic learner. My 2 cents ??

1 年Interesting way to look at it, but surely the right way! The amount of learning we get while being on the journey is more than what we can get by just reading about the journey.
