Do you ever wonder how much you should share about yourself during a coaching session???
This is a topic that a lot of coaches have different opinions on, but I wanted to share my thoughts and see what you think.
For me, it’s all about the right balance.?
I want to create a safe space for my clients where they can feel comfortable sharing their most vulnerable parts of themselves.?
But, when trying to achieve this, it’s important that we don’t get so caught up in our own stories that we lose sight of the bigger picture — which is helping them reach their goals.
So what can we do to create that safe space for our clients? To get them to open up and show us how they really feel, without over exposing ourselves?
We need to give ourselves permission to be human—to admit our imperfections and failures without judgment or fear of judgment from others (including ourselves).
And this doesn't mean sharing all your secrets with the whole world. It means trusting your intuition and allowing yourself and your clients to get to know you for real.
I've learned that it's not about being perfect for your client. Being human, being vulnerable—that's what helps them grow.
I'm sure there are times when you've been working with a client, and you've had an intuitive feeling that something is off-kilter in your relationship with them.?

Maybe they don't seem like they're engaged in the session, or they're not sharing their true feelings.?
Guess what? Most of the time when this happens, it's because you haven't built enough trust with your client yet to be able to share who you really are—and sometimes that means being vulnerable.
Once your client knows that they can trust that vulnerability in you … well, then things start opening up for both of you.?
Get comfortable with being imperfect—because if we're all on this journey together, then we might as well go there together. :)
Share something that shows how flawed and human you are—because then they'll feel more comfortable being real with you too.?
It doesn't mean you have to go all out and share every single aspect of your past (although if you want to do that, go ahead!). Remember, finding the right balance is key.
It just means that you need to trust your intuition about where things are going in order for both of you to really get there together.
So, next time you’re in a session with a client, you now know what to do.?
Share your most genuine self, and let your client know that you are not there to judge … you are there to help them achieve their wildest dreams.

3 个月You can be vulnerable and real while still commanding and guiding the client to get the answers they want. You help them scoop out what they have know all along. There is a very thin balance. We must not project our beliefs. We are there to help our clientes. They have their own answers and we can work with that
Transform your team dynamics, achieve deeper trust, seamless collaboration, elevated engagement and performance.
2 年This specifically resonated with me: "We need to give ourselves permission to be human—to admit our imperfections and failures without judgment or fear of judgment from others (including ourselves). And this doesn't mean sharing all your secrets with the whole world. It means trusting your intuition and allowing yourself and your clients to get to know you for real." I agree. People open up when they feel heard and understood. So, when a client mentions something and you can see or hear the difficulty they had in bringing that forward, it is time to share a salient insight or experience. Probably the worse thing to say is I know how you feel. But sharing something similar does produce the common ground and perhaps permission when asked to explore deeper. This is especially true for the executive and leadership coaches we partner with in the use of our comprehensive system.
