Marking Non-Binary People's Day I wrote the article below to share with my colleagues at Livv Housing Group......
Thursday 14th?of July is?Non-Binary People’s day......But why do we need a day to celebrate the existence of Non-Binary people? We already have Pride in June and LGBT History Month in February – surely we don’t need a day for everything!
But Non-Binary people are still misunderstood and often marginalised, even within the LGBTQ+ community. Considered part of the trans community but not quite defined by trans definitions, Non-Binary people often struggle to find allyship and community and often become isolated while people stumble over pronouns and how to talk to or about them. It is therefore important to shine a spotlight on what it means to be Non-Binary and to raise awareness to aid a culture of inclusivity.
There are lots of resources to help us understand what it means to be non-binary, some of which can be found?here,?here?and?here.
Interesting fact!
Did you know that?“The gender binary system (the idea that there are only men or women) that exists within many western societies is far from a universal concept”?
In the islands of Samoa, the?Fa’afafine and Fa’afatama?occupy the roles of third and fourth genders. In Mexico, the?Muxe?represent a third gender and in Southern Chile, the?Machi?are revered among the Mapuche as being shamans and healers, existing beyond gender binaries with gender being determined by identity and spirituality.
