Noice stories: Shijun Wang, Senior DevOps Engineer

Who are you, Shijun? Where do you come from professionally?

I’m Shijun Wang; I’m the senior DevOps Engineer here at Noice since July 2022. I started with the company back in April 2021 as a DevOps Engineer, - so it’s just been my two-year “work-iversary” :)

What do you do at Noice?

As the senior DevOps Engineer, I’m responsible for the infrastructure at Noice - all the “very back of the back-end” features we need for our product. I work with my team, including Kari and Vesa, to make sure the foundation we build our product upon, so to speak, is solid. So in more detail, I’m managing our infrastructure in?GCP with Terraform and CDKTF using TypeScript. I’m also running Kubernetes clusters on GKE, Kubernetes application management, and building CI pipelines with GitHub Actions with self-hosted runners in Kubernetes. Occasionally I also dabble in the field of MLops working to deploy, maintain and improve our Kubeflow cluster.

Why did you choose to work at Noice? What were some of the things, people, or ideas that lured you in??

It’s kind of a funny story - I have basically followed people I like to work with to and from different companies during my career. Many people at Noice know each other through having worked together at Unity before - that’s the case for me too. I worked at Unity for almost 3 years before joining Noice. There I got to know some amazing people I truly enjoy working with, and when I was introduced to Noice, I knew I had to check out the opportunity.

Naturally, my pre-existing connections “lured me in” - but there’s also much about our product that challenges me as a professional and that I find exciting. There’s great potential and scalability in our product. As far as infrastructure goes - Noice offers me new challenges every day, because it’s a truly unique thing we’re doing. Even though it’s not the best in the moment when something comes up - I still think it’s more fun to solve problems and push forward with a vision, than to continue “doing the same thing”.

What about outside of work?

I love gaming - it's a great passion I dedicate most of my free time to.

So what's your favourite game?

I would have to go with Hunt: Showdown and War Thunder for the time being!
