Nobody, ever, did anything better with more on their mind

Over the past few months during lockdown, training and coaching have continued here at Wynning at full speed; with clients wanting to know more about how to adapt, how to be more resilient, how to connect, how to lead and how to grow themselves and their business with a whole new way of working.
While I'll share more about this in the coming days and weeks during a brief hiatus in my own work schedule, what I've noticed most in talking with leaders of people is in their desire to help their teams perform and succeed. Yet, many leaders try to help by 'adding' to what's on their people's minds. I've heard phrases such as "I want them to think really hard about what they’re doing every day and getting the absolute most out of their video calls with each client"; "I want my team to have a list of things they need to do to gain rapport with their key global clients" and "I want them to constantly think about how they're doing, are they on top of their own weaknesses all the time"
While the aim of each leader and behind each of the quotes above is to genuinely help (especially as they aren't working in the same building as their teams right now); every one of these comments has a fundamental and significant flaw. You're adding more into your team member’s minds while they are doing their work - and that's a bad idea.
As the statement at the beginning of this post states, "Nobody, ever, did anything better with more on their mind" is a truth in human performance. Every human, every task.
Not sure about this? Take a look for yourself… Do you do better, get more done, more effectively and efficiently from a place of clarity and focus or from a place of juggling thoughts about how you’re doing / what do they think of me / what will my boss say while doing all aspects of your job?
Everyone does their best, moment to moment, by being present to the task at hand or present to the people they’re meeting with; rather than focussing on their thoughts and thoughts about thoughts in their head.
