NOBLE DEFENDER Arctic Update, CP-140 to Haiti, and Decommissioning the CCGS Alfred Needler

Long-planned air operation in the Arctic completed by NORAD

Operation NOBLE DEFENDER was recently completed, demonstrating the North American Aerospace Defence Command’s (NORAD) capability and readiness to defend both Canada and the United States in the challenging Arctic environment. This dynamic force employment operation was conducted between January 15-31, 2023, across multiple Arctic locations and the coasts of the Canada and the United States.

Canadian CP-140 long-range patrol aircraft deployed to support Haiti

The Minister of National Defence, Anita Anand, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, recently announced that Canada has deployed a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) CP-140 Aurora long-range patrol aircraft to support Canada’s efforts to disrupt the activities of gangs in Haiti. The effort further demonstrates Canada’s commitment to the Haitian people. Violence and dire security issues exist within the country and continue to escalate. Canada is attempting to address the situation by answering the request of the Haitian National Police for assistance.

Decommissioning of the CCGS Alfred Needler

The CCGS Alfred Needler is being decommissioned after 40 years of service to Canada as. Fisheries science vessel. The vessel suffered several significant mechanical and structural failures. The condition of the vessel was closely evaluated, and it was determined that further investment in repairs would not reasonably allow it to return to reliable and safe service.

Mr. Jacobson also happens to be the chief designer of White Glacier’s renowned immersion suits. He got his start in the defence industry in 1988 when one of his first jobs was as the Government liaison for White Glacier. An ability to continuously think outside the box and a razor-sharp focus on survival have been the driving factors behind his compliance shattering product. White Glacier is pushing the boundaries of Immersion suits and is intent on doing the same for other marine safety products and consumer goods.

Perspective

Canadian Rangers should have their maritime mission

The recent auditor general of Canada’s report on the matter of Arctic waters surveillance was both disappointing and alarming. It was disappointing because it highlights that “the government has not taken the required action to address long-standing gaps affecting its surveillance of Canada’s Arctic waters” and alarming, because soon, we could be partially blind to what is going on in this beautiful but fragile part of our country because there could very well be gaps in the replacement of critical assets such as icebreakers and space-based surveillance satellites.
